Let me ask... |
Cojak |
There was a time I could click here and there were always at least a few browsing/reading.
I know for awhile I tried to do the COG page, can't remember the name, but it was NEVER as interesting to the layman as Acts.
I am not much of a FB person either.
Is there another active site like Acts that you guys have gone to? Or has a discussion board lost interest to laymen (And ministers of course).
I do blog and read some, but they too are biting the dust.
Of course at 85 yrs old, maybe I am out of touch. LOL
Shucks, I miss a bunch of folks... _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

We've lost a lot of good folks. I miss them too.
I'm on FB but mostly family for pics. That's the only other place I post. |

I agree.
The other pages don't live up to the original - at all.
It's sad. _________________ Whether you like it or not, learn to love it, because its the best thing going today! |

Social media, like Facebook, allows men to make a name for themselves. Much of what I read on the Facebook site seems to be aimed at that objective. I’m sure I’m just an old stick-in-the-mud that time has passed by. |

It would be nice to be able to discuss theology and philosophies of ministry here or somewhere else.
The challenge I see is some of these conversations get charged with people who get offended if somebody disagrees with them. |

Definitely agree with this. Try as we might to remain open minded, the opposite happens as we age. Still, I don’t know why a person has to get offended just because someone has a different understanding of a particular doctrine or such.
Case in point, I have always believed in the post Tribulation coming of the Lord. That viewpoint rubs the pre Tribulation camp the wrong way for some reason. I don’t get offended at those whose beliefs differ from mine, and we can all learn something from one another. It’s when emotions take over that the learning generally stops. IMHO of course! _________________ “Hell will be filled with people that didn’t cuss, didn’t drink, and may even have been baptized. Why? Because none of those things makes someone a Christian.”

Being offended was part and parcel of Acts. On Facebook sites, everyone is afraid to challenge an overseer or prominent pastor.
Not so on Acts. Anyone could be challenged - and as long as it wasn't a personal attack, the layman and pastor and overseer defended what they had said on equal footing.
It just don't see it happen at the other sites - except on a few subjects.
I just feel like I learned so much more here than there because all of us can benefit defending what we believe from time to time.
Even Aaron Scott's clown show had a place here. _________________ Whether you like it or not, learn to love it, because its the best thing going today! |

There are very few ... |

There are very few places in which you can speak "truth of power" and question the status quo or challenge denominational/ministry self narratives. I was drawn to Actscelerate for those reasons, as well as to better understand the culture of the COG.
Often I say I learned to "knife-fight" (with words of course) on Actscelerate, sometimes getting "cut" and sometimes "cutting." No matter the depth of the wounds the credo of "living to fight another day" was true, unless you got banned that is.
I have learned a great deal about the COG here, perhaps to the chagrin of those who would present a different version of "truth."

PS As an example this is where I learned the meaning of "golfcart mafia." |

Speaking of the past. I always enjoyed Brad Freeman and many others of course, who did you think was the most interesting character of the past here on ACTS.?

Actscelerate was a blessing to the COG. It really did tame a lot of denominational heavy handedness. It also provided some great friendships. |

Anonymity was very powerful |
Aaron Scott |
It allowed you to say things that you DARED not say under your real name. NOT because you were trying to to sneak something, but because there were some on this site that would digitally tar and feather you for saying something they disagreed with.
And if people knew your real name, you got tarred and feathered in real life, too.
So it was a joy to be able to speak freely without holding back to "protect yourself."
HOWEVER, some used their anonymity to say hateful things about others. And those using their real names would, when an argument got heated or started going against them, claim that the anonymous poster was "hiding" behind their pen name.
There was an attempt, it seems, to attach courage and integrity to using your real name...and cowardice to those using a pen name. But this was not true at all. Why? Because those who used their real names often never said anything that seemed very critical of the Church of God. In other words, it seemed that they were playing for attention from Cleveland. (I don't know if that is true, but is sure SEEMED like that was the case.)
None of us can afford to lose our positions because we ask some pointed questions, etc.
The other issue was to INDEFINITE BANNING of users. There was no sentence length attached to a "crime," it was indefinite. In time, some of our most popular and provocative posters began to back away.
I proposed a general amnesty, but it didn't seem to gain any traction. It was Doyle's board, and if anyone deserved to make the decisions, it was him. He put a massive amount of work in creating a non-official voice for the Church of God, allowing valid critique, etc.
I don't know if we could EVER get back to those times, but maybe we ought to un-ban everyone, and let the good times roll--assuming anyone still comes around to prowl. |

Doyle hisself posted once that OTCP was the most prolific poster on Acts. Now, hey, that might not have a heap to do with bein interesting, but I shore nuff had a heap a fun with the ole timer. |

Amen. I agree.
I have been fortunate to meet some of you guys and I think it has improved my life. It appears ACTS has past its prime, but I think it is still a blessing. I do appreciate Doyle for having the foresight to see the need. I wish I could have met him...... _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

This is close, but not quite what the aim of the Signature Series forum was. When Doyle and I discussed creating this forum, the idea was that there was often more weight when something was said by a person using their real name. It gave an opportunity for posters to say something with that added weight. When that forum was opened, we gave users the one-time option to change their username to their real name or to create a new, separate account that was their real name. Some chose one, others chose the other, while still others chose to remain only anonymous. There's nothing that prevented anyone from using both. The only restriction was that those posting in the Signature Series forum had to use their real name to do so. Any user name could be used in the Acts-celerate forum.

This is also not quite right. It's true that no sentence length was attached to most bannings until the user contacted Doyle. Doyle was always very generous in giving multiple chances and stating the length of any given banning to a user that contacted him directly by phone or email. There's also one point that we did provide amnesty to almost every poster in our ban list. A few posters were so problematic that we volunteers had neither the time nor the energy to re-engage with them. All of these posters had been given multiple chances before being permabanned. An additional group of posters whose usernames broke the terms of use of this site were also not reinstated. Almost every banned user was reinstated at that time. Most were temporarily and then permanently banned after some additional time. _________________ Signature Themes: Connectedness | Futuristic | Ideation | Intellection | Learner |

I read the forum for about a year before I joined in. I just never gave it much thought and thought one must have a pen name, so I picked one. I have really enjoyed Actscelerate and do appreciate the ones who contributed, created and monitored.
My wife and I were invited to Gen HQ to see the new buildings, new to us anyway. Of course the officials were very helpful with information. When we reached the the missions department I was surprised to see old friends there. In our talks I mentioned something I had read on Acts, I was taken aback at a gasp and some hard looks. A friend I was stationed with in the military was near and called me aside. "Jack we here in Foreign Missions do not read Doyle's stuff, the head of the department reads it daily and keeps us up to date to the rumors and things there."
I laughed and told him I could not believe that silly attitude. I mentioned him that I couldn't think of a much more childish approach and You would think it was pornography or something that might lead to dancing. ;-0
He softened a little and said, I do call it up every once in awhile.
I told him that sounded like something you might hear in the 1950s.
I grinned many years later when I think it was Loran who called Actscelerate, 'Religious Pornographic' or something like that. Some folks judge by what they hear, SAD. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

The younger crowd is generally pretty soft and can't handle challenges to their opinions. We see it in the crazy ANTIFA/BLM/HAMAS College crowd, but it also exists in the Christian community. My beloved high school history professor told me, after retiring, that this generation is likely to either melt down and cry when they are challenged on anything in the classroom, or for the few that don't, come back with a gun, and that's why he retired. That was the social-media generation, just wait until the AI generation reaches adulthood. Nobody will be able to tell them anything different than the ethics algorithm programmed into them by the radical owners of the platform. The free exchange of ideas and the natural debate that occurs on this platform does not make sense to the next generation. |
