Post Political marriages in the COG Da Sheik
We know that King Solomon had many wives. It seems relatively clear that many of them were simply political marriages (daughters of neighboring country's kings ).

I'm sure it happens in all walks of life but I have seen this same philosophy at work in the COG. Not necessarily an actual "marriage " but the cultivation of certain friendships in hopes of political advancement. One of my colleagues told me he was going to start hanging out with a certain preacher because he knew he was "connected" and would likely curry favor for future appointments. I almost threw up in my mouth when he said that.

Its called "POLITICS" Sheik. Happens ever day in the COG. I know fellers who "befriended an buddy-buddied" overseers (an others) till they got what they wanted. Some of em is still doin it. I know AB's who even got the AB position cause they politicked certain EC members. Its shameful, but it happens ever day. But let us never think that everbody in positions got there that way, they didn't. Many are straight as arrows. Acts-pert Poster

In this day and age, when self-seeking, self-promotion and selfishness in general are almost considered virtues, few things may surprise us, unfortunately.

Phil 2:3 ESV Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Are you guys a bunch of Rubes or something?

How would you ever get appointed to anything if no one knows your name?

Iron sharpens iron.
A friend shows himself friendly.
What about the widow woman meeting a new preacher one day - next thing you know she needs new pots to contain all the oil that starts flowing. She worked with the guy FIRST.

These are all describing actively working with other people.

If I am hiring someone - I would want to know that aren't some jack-leg with a nice resume. I can only know their interpersonal skills if I know them.

You guys keep to yourself and keep on whining about never getting a break - it is a self fulfilling prophecy.

Me - I'm getting out there and meeting someone new every day. You never know when they will be the one that makes a break happen for you.
And yes - God uses the people you meet to fulfill his will.

NBF- I think we all agree that God uses people to help get us where we need to go. But I'm talking about people using other people. There's a difference.

And why would you assume that any of us are isolating ourselves or that we have never been appointed to anything? You might be surprised Wink

Now calm down and go put someone in the Figure-Four Twisted Evil

The Sheik is dead on an NBF knows it. When its God ordained, promotion don't come from the east/west, but from God. When its political, you got fellers hangin all over somebodies coattail beggin fer a promotion or position. Vast difference tween the two. Acts-pert Poster

Selfish ambition is absolutely ungodly. God has indignation and wrath for the self-seeking, according to Rom. 2:9-11 for just one scriptural example.

That doesn't mean we are never to do anything but stay at home and wait for God to just unilaterally place us somewhere. Jesus certainly acted on the Spirit's call and direction, and so should we. Jesus never acted from selfish ambition. He is our example.

Post The system ... Mat
The system you love to hate and hate to love. It seems the COG system - positions, elections, appointments and term limits - has resulted in some of its adherents struggling with a "love/hate relationship", that is to say being of "two-minds". Many of the recent post have to do with who should fill the slots of the top elected positions and other post decry the politics of "the system". It gets to be a "circular argument", as in "we elected some great leaders", but "we don't like who they appoint (or the agenda they composed)."

As an outside observer (by the way I attend your business sessions in Orlando) with a long family history in the COG, I would suggest that a good hard look at how the system developed and its functional consequences (good and bad) would be enlightening.

Term limits are a good example. There seems to be a desire for some leadership (ABs as a example) to have opportunity to stay in the position longer to create continuity and develop long term strategies. Yet, the system is structured for just the opposite, with no one wanting to "surrender" the possibility of a change in leadership.

I guess a good question to ask is why and when were term limits incorporated in the system? It may not be why (or who) and when you think.

By the way, "politics" and "networking" can look very similar if you are on the outside looking in, yet I would say the first undermines and the second strengthens.
