When's the last time you preached or heard a message on "Holiness"? |
Mark Ledbetter |
Robert Girdlestone writes,
Quote: | The terms sanctification and holiness are now used so frequently to represent moral and spiritual qualities that they hardly convey the idea of position or relationship as existing between God and some person or thing consecrated to Him. |

As it is a primary theme of the Bible, and as it is something without which no one shall see God, I feel compelled to preach on holiness quite often actually. If not the main point of the sermon, it is often a related point, especially with regard to application. |

Yes, indeed... |
Mark Ledbetter |
2 Corinthians 7:1
Quote: | Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

I'm not a preacher but I talk about it all the time. Personal holiness. Taking care of your body as it is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It doesn't get preached by preachers who don't take care of their bodies. Who should be leaders in taking care of the temple more than holiness people? Instead, it seems to be the opposite. |

I appreciate all the comments here. Some of us would never consider partaking of tobacco or alcohol but we don't think twice about abusing our bodies with food.
But if I may take it beyond the external (food/drink/dress), I think we have an even bigger problem with internal holiness. We hold on to bitterness, unforgiveness, ungodly anger, and strife. These should also be points of emphasis when preaching on/about holiness. |

1Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. _________________ Charles A. Hutchins

Just in the last 6 months I preached a message about holiness and the importance a the sanctified life. I don't mean clothesline preachin or a diatribe on externals, but a look at biblical holiness. |

Yep, that's the verse that justifies eating at the Golden Corral. 😂😂😂
I like this one:
1Cor 9:27
but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. |

Preached on it Thursday.
Holiness - from the Greek "hagiasmos", the same as sanctification
2 chapters before QW's favorite verse (Heb. 12:14), Paul tells these Hebrews, who have been trying to sanctify themselves for 1,500 years, how we received holiness.
By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10
We have been made holy "through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ".
We have been made holy "once".
We have been made holy "for all" time.
"But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption—" 1 Cor. 1:30
Yes, Jesus "became for us" holiness. He gets the glory, not us.
You are as holy as God is.
You don't have a holiness like His or similar to His. You aren't working toward His holiness.
He is your holiness.
In spirit, we are united with Christ in the new man, which is "created" in true "holiness".
"and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness." Eph. 4:24
So we are putting this new man on.
We are unearthing this treasure. 2 Cor. 4:7
We are seeing the fruit of this new man manifested in holiness in our behavior or conduct. 1 Pet 1:15, 16
We are perfecting or following holiness with all men so men can see God (not us), see our good works and glorify our Father (not us). Heb. 12:14; Mat 5:16
Or, as Eddie points out, we are disciplining our bodies, modifying our behavior (becoming a Jew, or weak, or as without Law), so others will hear our message. 1 Cor. 9
Holiness in the flesh is achieved when our lives manifest the fruit of the Spirit.
Holiness in the spirit is achieved when we come to faith in Christ and experience the new birth.
Every good gift comes from God. James 1:17
We cannot manifest holiness apart from God giving it to us.
The lie that killed Adam was that he could produce life in the knowledge of good and evil or by the sweat of his face.
Holiness is fruit of Him living in us, making us new in Christ.
He gets the glory because He is your holiness.
"that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”" 1 Cor. 1:31 _________________ I'm not saved because I'm good. I'm saved because He's good!
