Post The COG was named shortly after 8:30 A.M Friday, January 11, 1907 doyle
According to the 1907 General Assembly Minutes, the Assembly was held at Union Grove (near Cleveland). Shortly after the session opened at 8:30 A.M. on Friday, January 11th, the issue of what the name of the new organization would officially be, was discussed.

The following brief note is contained in the 1907 Assembly Minutes:

"Name of Church. Decision harmoniously made, CHURCH OF GOD, I Cor. 1:2, 2 Cor. 1:1."

Question: Why did they have the Assembly during the winter back then? Just my opinion, but in those days, America was primarily an agricultural society. Many of those wanting to attend Assemblies, were farming oriented. Their Spring, Summer and Fall, was sun-up to sun-down plowing, sowing, weeding, harvesting crops and 'canning.'

The winter gave them a little time off.

Rural people in particular, grew their own food. Travel to town by horse and wagon, and to what few grocery stores were available, could take a take a full day or more.

And.....it is my theory that because of eating from the land and doing physical work, there were no obesity issues. In fact, I have yet the see a picture of an obese person from those early church years. So, that is why the teachings didn't include taking care of the body in that way. It is my belief that had it been included, wouldn't have had such an issue with obesity through the years. If people would have viewed it as sin just like all the other things, it would have been taken seriously. Just my theory. Acts-pert Poster

The food they ate was healthy, they didn't have junk food and they probably didn't have an extra amount to be able to eat too much.

Junk food is the reason you see so many obese people now.

Yet, they still died younger - wonder what the rest of the differences were?

I don't know COG history, so I don't know what factors might have gone into the timing of the Assembly.
But since we like to amuse ourselves with speculation around here... If I had to venture a guess, I would guess that they might have chosen to convene as soon as possible after the decision to convene was made. If farming folks in Tennessee in the early 1900's were picking a time, they might have chosen a time in mid summer when the crops were "laid by," in other words, the big chore of planting was over, and harvest had not yet begun on the money crops like cotton, corn, or tobacco. Winter might not have been particularly desirable given the possibility of winter storms, all other factors being equal.

Old people that survived their youth and working years lived just as long as they do now. The average is what was lower, and that was due to lack of sanitary conditions, medical advances, and safety conditions in the workplace and home. We have increased the average dramatically, but the longest lives by very little.
