Can you name 2 CoG ministers in your state who are really getting the job done? |
Dean Steenburgh |
In your individual states.
Preferrably 2 CoG ministers whom none of us really know?
Or maybe at least 2 who are not on the traditional campmeeting circuit?
Do you know of a pastor or a staff minister who are doing ministry w/out a lot of attention from others?

I can name a lot more than two!
I really love and appreciate the pastors in our state. They are older, middle aged and young. They are mostly male but there are some great women too. They are in large, metropolitan areas, in small cities, large towns and in rural, country churches. We do need more of them and more churches planted but surely we all know of more than two?!
Not trying to be funny about the question, I just really feel like there are so many that are laboring so hard. I'm not about to rate someone's value in ministry based upon them simply sending in "a lot" of money (that's subjective what a lot is) and/or them being able to report a "large" attendance for morning worship (Again subjective on what "large" is). We have greatly demeaned and devalued the Body and the Kingdom when we reduce our expectations and reputations to these two numbers. "Comparing themselves among themselves, ye are not wise!"
Full disclosure: I participated in naming some good pastors/leaders under 40 in another thread. I almost started a post today naming some good pastors/leaders over 40 but didn't get around to it. I may name some pastors/leaders that are "doing a good job" later but I promise it will be more than two! _________________ Proverbs 3:5-6; John 13:34-35; Acts 1:8

David and Scott are not in my state, but they are both on my list for council of 18. It would be a real shame for either of them to not be on the council this time around. They are two uniquely gifted leaders.
From my state:
Brandon Bohannon
Doug Anderson
Both are making a significant impact in their respective churches. Both love the Church of God. |

David Smith at Monroe. Another young man who is "getting it done" is Adam Wright at Wiley Church of God, just south of Clayton, GA. What has taken place at that church is nothing short of incredible. _________________ Eddie Wiggins |

I haven't been here in a while and thought I would check in this evening and saw this.
We have several really gifted leaders and pastors in the Rocky Mountain Region. You asked for two but let me mention four...
David Smith, Family Worship Center, Pueblo. David and Charissa came to Pueblo 25 years ago from a youth pastor position in South Georgia. He had twelve his first Sunday. He now averages 1500-1600 in attendance. He is making a tremendous impact on that city. He never promotes himself. He has just served faithfully in the field where he has been planted.
Larry Ruiz, Agape Fellowship, Pueblo. Larry and Alicia moved to Pueblo from Los Angeles twenty one years ago. He was attending an independent church with family. He got connected with David Smith and came to the Church of God. Larry wanted to plant a church so with David's help, they planted and organized in 1995. They average around 200 now in attendance. This is an exciting church. Larry is just a great guy.
Mark Testroet, Valley View, Denver. Mark and Debbie moved to the Denver area after planting a Church of God in Layton, Utah. He came into a very difficult situation that could have caused the church to disband. He has been faithful in reaching the community around them. They are averaging just close to 200 now. This church is really doing the work of ministry.
Dean Sisk, Christian Worship Center, Roy, Utah Dean has been pastor of this church for over 17 years, In an area that is saturated with Mormonism, they have connected with the community and is an exciting church. He has helped to plant several churches in that area. One is The Genesis Project that met in Dean's building until they were strong enough to get their own place. Genesis Project is averaging 1300 with a couple more campuses now. Dean's church is averaging just under 200.
These are men that are not known outside of our region. They are solid Church of God guys who are faithful to the church and to the region. I consider it an honor to serve with them in the work of ministry in this beautiful area of our country. |

What a wonderful report from 2nd Generation. It is poignant because I spent a few months in Clearfield many years ago and visited the Roy COG. It was a struggling church at the time. Wonderful to read the reports, makes me smile knowing personally the opposition to 'Gentiles' in the area.
My THANKS to Dean for the OP, this report made me feel good.

I am reading and hearing great things about both David Smith (Colorado) and David Smith (North Georgia). That is seen in this very thread of conversation. I do not know the Colorado David Smith, but know the North Georgia David Smith well. It is apparent that both are recognized leaders. Wouldn't it be cool to see both on the Council of Eighteen, just to see the confusion every time one was called upon? lol |

I met Bishop Lennox Walker about ten years ago when we were both invited to serve on a committee at General Headquarters. I was immediately impressed by his heart for the Lord's church and his passion to extend the work into new areas.
Bishop Walker is a pastor and an overseer in Eastern Canada. We need more people like him.
In case you don't know him, here's some info from his website.
Bishop Lennox Walker is the Administrative Bishop for Church of God in Ontario. Thirty-eight (3 years ago after a near death and life altering incident, Bishop Walker gave his life to the Lord. He is a radical and unconventional speaker, known in both local and international circles for preaching dynamic, life changing and inspirational sermons. Without question, Bishop Walker seeks to advance the Kingdom of God by empowering God’s people around the globe.
For those familiar with Bishop Walker’s leadership record, you know he has served in numerous positions in the Church of God, starting as a young Evangelist, travelling the hilly terrains of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was a brilliant student at Bethel Bible College in Jamaica, under the tutelage of Dr. Lindsay Arscott. Upon graduation he was assigned Pastor of Old Harbour and later West Prospect New Testament Church of God in Jamaica.
After immigrating to Canada, Bishop Walker served as Assistant Pastor and Assistant Superintendent of Redemption International Faith Ministries and for five years, as Senior Pastor of East Toronto Church of God, now Grace Fellowship Church of God Ministries in Scarborough Ontario.
Alongside his role as Administrative Bishop, Bishop Walker is currently the Senior Pastor of Praise Cathedral Worship Centre – the largest Church of God church in the Canada, where he has been ministering for over nineteen (19) years. He has served the Church of God in various capacities… District Overseer, MIP Coordinator, Regional Council Member, National Council Member, and also on the National Pastor's Advisory Council in Cleveland Tennessee. He currently serves on the Black Ministries Council for Church of God International in Cleveland, Tennessee.
He was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Government of Canada in 2013, and in 2015 conferred with honorary Doctorate of Divinity from CICA for his distinctive leadership and exemplary work in community development.
Bishop Walker is a visionary and his vision extends well beyond the church. Associating with him, you will realize that he has a deep rooted passion for young people and the elderly. He has travelled extensively around the world, positively impacting lives in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, various parts of the United States and Canada, as he ministers the Gospel at crusades and conferences, and serving others on the mission-field.
On a yearly basis Bishop Walker through Praise Cathedral Worship Centre, sponsors students at Bethel Bible College and offers numerous scholarships to those who struggle with funding their education, locally and internationally.
A resident of the City of Mississauga, Lennox and Dorett have two daughters, three sons, and a daughter-in-law (Shawn, Chaunyce, Damar, Shamar, Lamar and Andreen) and a grandson, Elijah. Bishop Walker is a congenial leader with great compassion for others; a deeply embedded passion for the Call of God upon his life, which makes him cry easily equating him to the prophet Jeremiah. He loves politics and golfing and he appreciates the finer things in life. Bishop Walker, no doubt, is leaving a dynamic spiritual legacy that indeed will impact his children, the church, education and the political arenas.
Also from the Church Website in regards to the history of the congregation:
In December 1996, yet another young family man, Rev. Lennox D. Walker, was appointed pastor. He entitled his first sermon, “The Sky is the Limit: We Can Make It If We Try!” Under his leadership, the church experienced tremendous growth which led to a shortage of space for members and visitors—members frequently vacated their seats to make room for visitors!
As the sanctuary was located in a residential area, the rapid growth caused stress to the surrounding community, which resulted in frequent parking and noise complaints from neighbours. After much consideration, Rev. Walker and the council made the recommendation to relocate to a more accommodating space and, in 1999, the Erin Mills Church of God building was sold.
In February 1999, the congregation began worshipping at the Meadowvale Secondary School auditorium, which remained their sanctuary until April 2005. By now an ordained Bishop of the Church of God, Bishop Walker continued to edify the church, immersing them in biblical teachings and exhorting them to live out key Christian principles.
Not long after relocating to the school auditorium, the members purchased a 3.67 acre lot on Millcreek Drive in Mississauga and built a 1,500 seat sanctuary. On May 1, 2005, the congregation moved into their new church home, which was renamed Praise Cathedral Worship Centre. The church also established the motto: A Church Where Folks Love One Another.
In September 2008, the church opened a daycare on its premises. Today, Hearts in Bloom Academy (HBA) is a flourishing child care and early childhood education facility.
Under the continued leadership of Bishop Walker, Praise Cathedral Worship Centre remains the largest Church of God body in the Eastern Canada Region. _________________ -- Living the Dream |

I'm not sure this is robbing them of their blessing or reward. I agree with another post that we usually only vote for those we hear about in the camp meeting circuits. I like the idea of posting names so that I can go and find information on them.
Personally, there have been some things happen in the Church of God that I don' t want to see happen again and the only way of making sure that does not happen is by making sure the same people do not get back into position. No offense intended to anyone but the COG needs to continue moving forward and embracing our up and coming leaders.
I am tired of going to GA and electing people because of their last name or because they are familiar.
The latest group of people in Cleveland have done a phenomenal job. The latest group in charge in my home state of KY have done a phenomenal job. Not knocking those before them but new faces bring new ideas and when you couple new ideas with knowledge the future is very bright for the COG. |

Dean,
What do you mean by "really getting the job done?" |
What I mean is In their area of ministry the minister is excelling in their position to the point where you have heard about their growth or success. I think my request is fairly easy to comprehend as several have made mention of some excellent ministers in their area.
My motive for this question is to ask about ministry leaders in our individual states who are excelling to the point where we as O.B.'s should consider using fresh leadership on the Ex Council & Ex Committee.
When i see the list on some of the other threads of the presumptive nominees it shows me where we're both weak & strong.
Do we grow & challenge ourselves by electing the same guys over & over?
Is the CoG going in the right direction of numerical growth if we keep re-electing the same guys on the circuit?
On the other side do we keep re-electing the same guys based on the performance record we've seen so far & we like the pace we're on?
I for one would love to see a major shake up in Cleveland in terms of leadership.
The shake up would include electing the PB & all the assistants from all areas of the U.S.
Split the country up into 5 regions & one EC member has to be elected from each region.
Currently the majority of guys serving on the EC or C18 are living East of the Mississippi & I would guess south of the Mason Dixon.
It may sound like fair representation if you live inside that geographical bubble but it doesn't sound like it represents a national view. If most of our leadership lived west of the Rockies & their ministry experiences came from west coast based churches with our national HQ in Seattle, Washington would you feel like the CoG had your best interest?

This is the kind of exciting news to re-tell because it gives other guys encouragement when they're facing various challenges.

Dean,
I meant no disrespect in asking what you meant by getting things done...
I've not been on here much in the last couple of years, and just saw your post. I figured I knew what you meant by your question, was just asking to make sure- the older I get, the less I like to assume.
There are several guys here in the Razorback State that love Jesus and are doing everything they can to advance His kingdom in the area they have been assigned. I don't know of a church in my area that is growing faster than the Rock of NEA- Terry Watson, pastor.
Ben Wiles, River of Life, Hot Springs, AR and Lance Arguello, Abundant Life, Farmington, AR (church plant now 12+ years old) are both phenomenal men of God as well. |
