Possible proposal to permit women the right to vote at the General Assembly |
revpastor |
Remove the name “Bishop” from the third rank of ministerial license in the Church of God. The first rank will remain Exhorter; the second rank Licensed Minister; and the third rank Ordained Minister. Should missionaries require a specialized license to be granted access into foreign countries then we develop a specialized Ordained Missionary License to satisfy those requirements. This provision is already in place for specialized license for those who desire a Minister of Music license as well as Christian Education; therefore, we can implement the same for missionaries called, Ordained Missionary, which would also carry voting privileges.
With the removal of the title “Bishop” from the third rank of license, women would now be able to hold all three ranks of license in the Church of God, which would grant them voting privileges on the floor of the General Assembly. Additionally, as already outlined in the Church of God minutes, ministers age 25 with 8 years active ministry are eligible to hold the highest rank of license in the Church of God, or age 30 with 5 years active ministry.
This amendment to our current nomenclature will offer equality of all ministers in the Church of God and permit them the right to participate in the voting process of the General Assembly and hold any other offices reserved for the highest rank of minister’s.

can't remember all of the great Biblical reasons and Scriptures that were used 20 years ago to convince us that we needed to go with "Bishop" as the identifier of our highest rank of ministry. It was pretty convincing though. |

No! And there's no "e" on the end of North Point. Git it right or git left. |

I'm sure you meant General Council but women are already allowed to vote in the General Assembly- the highest governing body of the CoG. |

Why not use 'bishop' for someone who oversees a local church, you know, kind of like in the Bible? _________________ Link |

Yes, and no one should be appointed who is straitened in his bowels.
And we should encourage the girding of loins.
Actually, it might be quite amusing to try to adopt "Biblical" language. |

It shore nuff does in most contexts. Now, Bishop is a biblical title, but certainly not for all preachers. Although the Ole Timer is a Ordained Bishop, I ain't never used--in any context--either "Bishop" or "Ordained Bishop" to refer to maself.
I was there when it was voted in at the GA. An when we all got back home from the assembly, local print shops and door plate and sign companies was doin some high volume business printin new business cards, letterheads, changing church signs, etc. In one week, ordained minister in the COG was a Bishop, an then the title toutin commenced. Hey, I remember fellers (part-time evangelists; pastors of churches with 10-15 folk; etc.) wantin everbody to call em "Bishop Billy Bob Brown." Not that a church of 10-15 is any less important than North Cleveland, an not that a part-time evangelist is any less important than fellers on the Ex Committee, but the "10-15 and part-time evangelist" ain't how the Bible uses the term Bishop.
