Shouldn't pastors expose these false prophets to the flock?
Not merely giving the dangers of false teachers, but naming those who have publicly knowingly deceived? |

My short answer is "yes" and my long answer is "yes, but."
Short answer: Yes. The quickest way to warn people away, if you have earned their trust, is to simply name names. But this won't work if you haven't earned their trust, and could cost you trust with them if they trust those false ministers more than they trust you. Also, you are very much feeding them, rather than teaching them to fish.
Long answer: Yes, especially if a particular false minister is particularly egregious or popular among your congregation. But in the main, trying to name names is like whack-a-mole. We have a tendency to focus on particular ministries, but what we should do is teach our congregations right doctrine so they can identity false doctrine on their own, regardless of whether it's coming from someone we have named or not.
Ephesians 5:11 says, "Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them." It doesn't say expose the workers of darkness, specifically -- it says expose the works of darkness. That could at times include the workers of darkness, but the main focus is on the works themselves.
Titus 1:9 says overseers "must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it." This carries both instructions. Give instruction in sound doctrine, and also rebuke those who contradict it. But if you are talking about a minister you have never met, you are not rebuking him to his face. The rebukes would be better directed toward the congregation, so that they "may be sound in the faith, not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth." (Titus 1:13) This could also include a rebuke about following a particular minister. But in general, I think the first and best approach is to teach people sound doctrine so they can identify false teachers on their own. But I am most certainly not against naming names, either. |

He prophesied in the 1990s that God would destroy the homosexual community by fire no later than 1995, that Fidel Castro would die in the 1990s, and in the year 2000, Hinn claimed God had revealed to Him that Jesus would soon "appear physically" on the stage of Hinn's upcoming crusades. I kid you not. It is amazing to me that anyone believes a word he says. |
I thought a woman he knew told Hinn that Jesus would appear physically on the stage, and Hinn repeated it over and over again.
Hinn 'got in trouble' with theologians for repeating Dake's theory about the Father Son and Holy Ghost each having a body soul and spirit back in the '80's and commenting 'there's 9 of them.' I think he recanted that and took the Dake theory out of an early draft of 'Good Morning Holy Spirit.'
I had a copy of the Hinn tape with the Fidel Castro and homosexual community prophecies and listened to it in the early 1990's. It sure sounded like Hinn. If I'm not mistaken, he preceded one of his predictions by, "The Holy Spirit tells me...." _________________ Link |
