They aint lost, I'm just real picky bout who I let look at em. |
OTCP,
All "verbal jousting" aside, if you have copies of the Evangel that span those "missing" years, you should contact the Pentecostal Research Center there at Lee. As the story goes some time in the 1950s the General Offices and Pathway did some "housekeeping" and sent truck loads of historic material to the dump. Someone, whose name I can not recall, saw the the material and saved a much as possible, but there are three years of Evangels missing. As far as I know, none of the various denominational offices have copies, nor has any individual collector stepped forward. That time period was just after the COG fully embraced the Pentecostal message, was expanding expediently and trying to understand issues like "signs following believers".
Just think of the research that could be done on the movement.

Just joshin with ya, Mat, the ole timer aint got no archives of the Evangel. But just so I'm clear here, are you sayin that somebody intentionally got rid of some historical documents so as to eliminate anything that would not align with LAMA? I've never heard such a charge. |
No, that is not what I said or meant. Rather, it appears, as presented to me, that it was more a matter of not realizing the historic value of the material. It may have been an issue of storage space, or just cleaning house. I don't know if it was as late as the 1960s, but it could have be related to the new General Offices on Keith and 25th (but not sure on that). It would be great to find those old Evangel issues, there was a great deal of emerging "theology" during that period of the movement.
Mat
PS But just for clarity sake, I have been told that it is difficult to challenge the view of history presented in LAMA within the COG. |

If they is no evidence to challenge the view presented in LAMA, then it shouldn't be challenged. If historical evidence reveals that LAMA, or any other volume in human history, either misrepresented factual data, or presented data which was later found to be in error, then integrity requires that it be addressed. |
