If you can't definitively measure who won, it's not a sport. Points have to be more than just a judge's arbitrary assignment of numbers to random acts on skates.
You can measure how many times a football was taken into the end zone.
You can measure who ran across a white line first.
You can measure how many times a puck hit the net.
You can measure how far a javelin was thrown.
You can measure how close a horseshoe was to hitting the bar.
You can measure how many times you fragged a demon in X amount of time.
You can measure how many times a batter tagged home.
You can measure who got in the eight ball first.
You can measure who drove past the checkered flag first.
Skating is too arbitrary to be a sport. It takes athletic conditioning, but that doesn't make it a sport. In sport, you can win based on some form of definitive measurement. _________________ Signature Themes: Connectedness | Futuristic | Ideation | Intellection | Learner |

PEACE!!! | I believe that racing, fishing, and hunting are legit sporting events. The if a sport's judgment is subjective interpretation, it is not a sport. Ice Skater Bob could do a routine more difficult than Ice Skater Brian. The judge likes the way Brian did his routine a little better so his program component points are higher. The technical points for Bob are higher, but if the judge thinks Brian looked better while performing, Brian wins. How is that a sport? There is no empirical non-subjective way to judge art, so how can you call it a sport? Just by assigning winners. Ice Skating, Ice Dancing, gymnastics, and all these other subjectively judged exhibitions, while entertaining, are NOT sports. |

In sport, you can win based on some form of definitive measurement. | Enthusiasts will point to the new scoring system in which half the points are gained based on completing jumps, spins, and spirals based on a highly complicated point rating scale attributed to difficulty and the point in the program at which the maneuver was attempted. Partial points are available for partial completion and deductions are given based on failing the maneuver. Half the points are still awarded for "Program Component" or what was once called artistic interpretation. GIVE ME A BREAK! |
