Jesus was NOT born in a manger |
Link |
I thought I'd point that out in case you folks haven't made your choice of songs yet. I think I've heard two recent Christmas songs that say that Jesus was born in a manger.
It sure would have been cruel to squeeze a pregnant woman into a feed trough to make her give birth.
I don't know why song writers who don't know farm terminology don't just read the text before writing the song. Jesus was laid in a manger after he was born. _________________ Link |

it was a large manger or a tight fit one:
(Luke 2:16 KJV) And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. |

Dave...that wouldn't change the ambiguity |

Of course, you know I'm joking about the whole thing...but the Oxford comma is the last comma in a series. I don't see how having it--or not--changes the unintentional.
It's just one of those awkward things like Ronald Reagan related. He said that someone came to a grave and it said, "Here lies John, a lawyer and a good man."
The visitor responded, "Well, how about that? They buried three people in this grave!"
Of course, the AP version has its own fun and games. |

Luke 2:7
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Joseph and the inn-keepers wife didn't force Mary to squeeze in to the feed trough. _________________ Link |

That didn't force her to give birth in a manger - but maybe she WANTED to.
Maybe she was PREDESTINED too.
I wasn't there.
I DON'T know.

Who knows how big that manger might have been? What was the alternative, the floor, a milking stool, a pile of hay?
I wasn't there either. |

The ole timers 4th cousin's grandma's great great great (back 2000 years) granddaddy was there. So I got it pretty straight. They was no room in the inn, the inn had booked a Jewish rap group an the place was full. So when Mary/Joseph got to the stable, they had this oversized manger--big enough to feed about 50 cows--that hadn't been used in several years. It was dry an full a hay. The little drummer boy helped Joseph get Mary in at big manger. An while at Jewish rap gang was rockin round the Christmas tree, the good Lord was born. I got this straight up from some kin folk. |

Ole Timer, did ya kinfolk allow as ta whether them animals talked an all? My son, when he was a right smart littler than he is now sung is song bout tha donkey all shaggy an brown an tha cow all white an red an tha sheep with the curly horn. Tha song was about what ever critter gave as told by tha critter hisself. I was just wonderin if at was how it really happened.
We made on a them video cassettes of ma son sangin. We went around ta differnt places where we could git the right livestock in tha background. My husband played the guitar. Hit turned out right good, I thought. |

At this point "what difference does it make".
For the record, a manger in those days looked much difference than our idea of a manger. Again what difference does it make. He was born. _________________ Recorded Sermons @ www.pastorwiley.com

I think Link is concerned about the scriptural integrity of the birth method. Apparently, Mary, since she didn't have ordinary conception, gave birth like a chicken does that doesn't have a rooster around. I believe the Bible says she "laid him in a manger." |
