Post How far is too far on the subject of politics from the pulpit? FLRon
I’m interested in knowing how some of the Pastors here deal with politics in your sermons. I know a Pastor who routinely bashes the current president as well as all Democrats in his preaching. At election time he uses his pulpit to not so subtly encourage people to vote for his choice of candidates.
What say you: how far is too far on this topic from the pulpit?

Speak about issues like abortion or same sex marriage, but don't get into politics. Your congregants know who is on which side. I never endorse a candidate. Acts-celerater

I’m with you. No sense in creating even more division in the church by hammering on politics.

I occasionally speak to issues like abortion, ‘gay marriage’, war, socialism, etc. I never endorse a candidate from the pulpit. In 2016 I did say from the pulpit that I felt compelled by conscience to vote for neither of the major political parties’ candidates that time around. I got some flak for that. Not sure my saying I was voting third party made any difference when all was said and done. [Insert Acts Pun Here]

WE visited the 1st Baptist Church in Tavares Florida once. It was during some election time. The sermon was totally about Demoncrats and their god forsaken candidates.
I left wondering how many of those 400 people were Democrats? Would they continue to attend and support?
I had the oddest feeling during the whole service, it wasn't a 'blessing feeling!'
In my opinion politics do not belong in the pulpit if you plan to shepherd the entire flock. Shocked

Paul said to the Corinthians that “we preach not ourselves….but Christ”.

IMO no preacher should insert his personal opinions or political slant into a sermon. That does not bring glory to God.

I was able to witness Pastor Robert Jeffress in Dallas make the statement from his pulpit that God fearing christians in his church would be best served if they voted for Mr. Trump.
His congregation went to their feet & the standing ovation seemed to go on for several minutes.
At the time his church boasted of having over 10,000 members & I recently read where they now claim in excess of 14,000 members.
I don't think his political leanings have hurt him at all ...in fact it appears that it has helped the church to grow.

Personally, I don't state my personal beliefs in terms of who to vote for but then again we are 130X smaller than Dallas 1st B.

Post Preach the Word, not politics Aaron Scott
If the Word says no to gay marriage and abortion, preach the word.

But I don't get into parties. Here's why....

Many years ago, one of our finest members--and long-time clerk--told me he would be voting for Clinton. WHAT??? I was quite taken aback, because this was a man of God who I trusted implicitly. But then he told me something that made me see things differently....

He had experienced the Great Depression. And he could remember how FDR "gave them hope." And probably more than money or jobs, people needed hope. He never forgot that, and he voted straight Democrat, apparently.

I could not fault him. He certainly was not voting for them because of abortion, etc., but because he remembered how they had helped "the little man."

We like to think that we are all in perfect alignment with our church doctrine, etc. But we all have some of those places, I imagine, where others would see things very differently, but it is so ingrained that we do not see it the same way they do.

Many times we forget the separation of church and state. It has been said we vote for a leader, a statesman, NOT a pope or pastor. Clinton was the last president to balance a budget (If I am not mistaken) I sure would like to see that again....

It is the duty of the church to preach Jesus and Him Crucified and rising from the dead. Many want to order or force morality, it has never worked methinks.

Anyway, politics should not live in a pulpit.....

The Bible says to 'let all things be done unto edifying.' We should be doing things like singing psalms, teaching the word of God, sharing prophecies and revelations, tongues and interpretations to edify one another. We should also partake of the Lord's Supper.

I don't see anywhere that the Bible teaches us to have political rallies in church.

Teaching from the word of God on issues in society is necessary. The world is trying to tell our kids it is okay to be gay, and they can be boys, girls, or some 16th gender if they want to. We should teach the word of God as it relates to issues like this.

The main issue is our obligation before God.

As far as US law goes, if any of your churches are organized as a 501c3, the IRS requires that you not make any statements for or against a political official. If you are an incorporated church and you fall under a certain 508 section, then you are not under this restriction and do not have to file a report every year. Deductions for 508's aren't as cut and dried, but I think getting deductions is still doable. If there is an audit, the donor may have to prove it's a church they donated to.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, so do not take this as official legal advice. But I have taught law at a university, and I played a doctor on TV.
