There are plenty of gays who, even though they cannot explain why they feel the way the do toward the same-sex, have been raised to believe that it is sinful. And while I'm sure many do not see the need to repent, the truth, I think, is that ALL OF US, if we give in to sin (of any sort), tend to think that while, yes, it's wrong for others, God sees it differently for us, knowing that we just couldn't help it, and so He extends more grace, etc.

That's not correct, of course. But we tend to find some way to excuse ourselves when it comes to temptations that we cannot seem to get victory over--or at least do so with ease.

Of course. Those who have been raised to believe they will be tormented in the lake of fire for all eternity and are told by the church they are sinners for being gay will attempt to repent. But, they are still gay. The majority of people who are gay, will simply leave the church or find an affirming church. The one mistake that we make is believing that they are, somehow, tempted into wanting gay sex. Funny how that only tempts people who are attracted to the same sex and always will. I mean, I’ve never been tempted by it.
Another mistake is to think sex is the only reason they are gay. They are gay because they are attracted to the same sex and fall in love. Not the actual sex act.

Post Position Paper Carolyn Smith
Eddie,

There is a lengthy COG position paper on Paul's Teaching on Same Sex Relations on this page:

I think what Eddie is saying is that we church folks tend to look at the entire problem in a light that doesn't help someone that's gay.

From what I've heard and read and know of certain people, being gay isn't a decision so much so as just a fact. They think and respond in a certain way from early childhood on. Some have been molested by an adult that seemed to push them in that direction. It has to do more with a person's mindset than his actions. And once they accept that mindset as normal they see no reason to repent. Most gays will tell you, "God made me this way." And do NOT say you hate the sin and love the sinner.

There is an entire gay culture that most of the church is unaware that even exists.

One of my best childhood friends was outed his senior year. He was a part of my church (COG) through some of his teenage years. He was raised FWB all his life but he was also molested on a church trip in earlier in his teens. He wrote a poem that spoke to the anguish he had suffered but "this I am." While he was a part of our church, he would go to the altar and pray and pray. I didn't know what his issue was at the time. He did make the statement to me that there was a definite difference in being saved and being sanctified.

After he was outed, I recall a service in which he went to the altar and the pastor acted like he was going to jump over the altar and assault the evangelist right there. Church, this is not how we need to address this problem. It is a reality in life, and we have to find a way to minister to those who struggle with it.
