Post What do you think? Carolyn Smith
I continue to be amazed at the number of ministers and spouses (just in the COG) who have passed away as a result of COVID. So many people who have served God faithfully have been taken down by this virus. It's hard to understand.

I am wondering if maybe we are missing something as we pray for these precious folks for healing. We are praying for their physical healing, but I wonder if maybe there is also a spiritual side that needs to be addressed as well. Obviously it is a physical attack, but perhaps there is a spiritual attack as well and both sides of this need to be addressed. Perhaps this is more true of ministerial folks. There are plenty of people who have come through this virus after being very sick, but so many ministers and their wives have died, it makes me wonder what the deal is. There has to be more to it, IMHO.
I am not trying to be super spiritual...I'm just trying to figure this out.

What do you think? Would love to hear your thoughts...

I tend to look at this from a different perspective. While I do agree there is a spiritual element to this, meaning we know sickness to be of Satan, I am of the opinion that COG ministers and spouses are more seceptable to the effects of Covid for two reasons.

1. COG ministers (and all others who walk by faith) tend to rely upon that same faith to keep themselves from harm, thus often not availing themselves of using the basic precautions that "regular" folks use such as masks, social distancing, etc.
Additionally, when we do get sick we tend to put off or delay seeking treatment believing God for our healing instead. This delay had proven deadly for so many.

2. By the very nature of their calling, COG ministers and spouses are far more likely to be exposed to Covid on a frequent basis. Praying for the sick, personal visitations, hand shaking, even a brief hug are all normal things for us to do yet leave us in a compromised position.

Personally, I know of a handful of COG and Baptist ministers and spouses near me who have died or remain in ICU because of Covid. One has to wonder if their pre-Covid health issues don't act as a magnet in attracting this virus. We all know ministers who are overweight, suffer from enormous stress, and are often depressed. Surely these risk factors are major contributors in their body's inability to ward off death from Covid or some other disease.

Some very good points here...... However the situation is confusing. Confused

It's all very confusing to me too, or as I like to say, it's all far above my pay grade.
If we believe that all of us have been given a specific allotment of days upon this earth, then should it matter what cause brings us to the end of those days? Covid, heart, cancer, natural causes, when our time is up we're leaving here.
I'm sure we all know far more COG ministers and spouses who have succumbed to the things I mentioned, but for now Covid is getting all the attention.
My two shekels worth...

It just seems to me far more ministers have died than is "normal." And while I'm sure some of them didn't "follow the rules" I would doubt that applies to everyone. I'm not completely sold on masks but I wear one when I'm supposed to.

It has been said by some that there is a spiritual root to this virus. Yes, it's a physical illness, but if there's a spiritual root/cause, that has to be dealt with as well.

The sad fact for many years has been that in general, ministers don’t take good care of their health. A large percentage are overweight or obese (40% of Americans in general fall into the obese category, in fact). Obesity is a major risk factor for serious complications from COVID.

Nowhere in Scripture, rightly interpreted, do we find any promise that viruses won’t be able to kill us, much less, that the consequences of our poor health choices can be avoided if we just have faith.

If that statistic is true, then of course they are highly susceptible to any type of virus or disease. Consider a virus no one has ever been exposed to such as Covid-19, the body can only do so much to repel the effects of it. Now add to the equation the health risks associated with obesity, and it’s no wonder a brand new virus can wreak so much havoc.

Makes one think that those Sunday feasts after church every week aren’t such a good idea after all. Meeting people for lunch a time or two every week plus going out after church on Sunday is a recipe for disaster health-wise.

It might be interesting to take a survey here to determine what if any regular exercise routines the resident preachers abide by. Personally, I try to walk 2.5 to 3 miles six days a week, but I do not eat as well as I should.

As someone that recovered for a horrible case of Covid I would say the fact that we don’t hide in our homes has a lot to do with the high case count. We continued to do our best to minister both at church and in an extremely busy food pantry. Right or Wrong many of us kept doing our best to minister. I was told to call my family and tell them by. I did that and just put it in God’s hands. Not sure way but God gave me more time. All I know is my time belongs to God.

Dow, I'm so glad you recovered! Praise God that He gave you more time!

The rest of you seem to be fat-shaming preachers. I agree a lot of folks are overweight, including me, but I really don't like it when we blame the sick person. Yes, we are responsible for the choices we make with food, but preachers are certainly not the only ones who are overweight.

So you don't think it's spiritual...at least you answered that question!

Very good article, makes sense, but it must be tough to consider losing that much weight. I was very proud to witness (thru the net) the loss of a couple ACTS members. That takes SOME self control! Cool
