Post Judas returned the 30 Pieces of Silver BUT ALSO bought a field with it? doyle
If Judas gave the betrayal payment of 30 Pieces of Silver back to the chief priests, how is it he bought a field with it?

“When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders” (Matthew 27:3).

"So, Judas threw the money into the Temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself" (Matthew 27:5).

“With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out” (Acts 1:18-19).

How did he hang himself and also "fall headlong?" Hanging does not normally cause one to burst open or their insides to spill out.

The priests bought the field with the money.

6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.

Hanging could be impalement, also. We think of a rope. Do you know anyone hanged on a tree in the Bible who hanged himself around the neck with a rope? Was that typical of Roman hanging or Babylonian or Persian hanging before that? Jesus was hanged on the cross. Imagine Judas might have impaled himself, through the abdomen on a tree limb, hanging himself on a tree. Then imagine his body weight causes the piercing in the mid to lower abdomen tear all the way to his rib cage, then the tree limb breaks, and he ends up falling head first and his guts fall out.

Post Judas stumbles to the edge, looks down into the abyss, dives headfirst... doyle
THANK YOU LINK for your response; some interesting thoughts in it.

Indeed, after Judas threw the 30 Pieces of Silver into the Temple and then left the area (Matthew 27:5), the Chief Priest and elders refused to accept it back into the treasury. They used the money to buy a field for burying strangers (Matthew 27:6).

However, Acts 1:18-19 says, "With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out” (Acts 1:18-19).

So, is it possible the Acts 1:18-19 reference, means that even though Judas refused to keep the betrayal money and gave it back, the purchase of the "Field of Blood"with it by the Chief Priest and elders, is to be viewed as if Judas had personally bought the field himself? Hmm.

Maybe the Chief Priest and elders bought the field in his Judas' name, not wanting to be identified themselves as being involved? 2nd Hmm.

The Bible doesn't say this, but here is one senerio: So Judas hears about the field that was purchased in his name. He cannot stay away. He is drawn to that field.

He desperately tries to keep his mind occupied, but night after night he is haunted by the field. He knows it is out there in the darkness. He can't sleep. He feels his mind slipping away. A devastated man, he shuffles his way towards the field. His hands are trembling. He is bleary-eyed. It seems his heart will beat out of his chest. Tears of regret stream down his face.

Stumbling his way along, he arrives at the field alone. Was there a cliff there; a high place of some kind? There had to be. He tied a rope around his neck, fastened that to a tree or overhanging rock. Taking a deep breath, looks over the edge into the abyss and dived head-first to his death and into eternity.

Wow, the psychological mental torment of his being drawn to that field, is a possible part of the story I have never considered at length before. However it transpired, the agony of his guilt was more than he could bear.

Peter denied Jesus three times, wept bitterly and returned to be at Jesus' side. Is there any record that Judas ever denied Jesus even once? He certainly did betray him. Peter put things back in the Lord's hands. Judas took things into his own trembling hands. Sad, Oh so sad.

**Other than what Scripture actually says as quoted above, all else is speculation only as to what "may" have happened behind the scenes.

I'm wondering if there is any case of someone who is hung on a tree in the Bible being hung by a rope, as opposed to being impaled. It seems likely to me that Haman might have also been impaled. Not sure. Babylonians were impalers. I read that Herodatus recorded that Darius impaled 3000 Babylonians. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impalement

I believe there are other cases in scripture where someone does something, but doesn't physically perform the act himself. In II Chronicles 32, Hezekiah redirected stopped water springs and brought them elsewhere. Did he get out there with a pick and shovel or did he have it done? Some things are done through agency. Some things are done on behalf of a group. The disciples asked why the ointment with which Jesus wasn't sold and given to the poor. But in John we read that it was Judas who actually said the words.

Judas gave back the money, and it was used to buy the field. It could be that we aren't given the sequence of events and they bought the field after they found his body in it. I imagine an owner of a field full of pottery shards willing to sell so as not to have to deal with a dead body on it, and chief priests seeing this as an opportunity to deal with a social problem of where to bury the poor.

If while we are imagining fictional details, I imagine Judas could have ended up with one of the two swords from the garden, fastened one to a tree limb, and harakiri'ed himself on it before falling head first on the ground.

Doyle, since Luke, who is the author of Acts, was a physician, I believe he was describing in graphic detail as to what happens to the human body after death when it is exposed to the harsh elements. Imagine a corpse hanging from a rope for who knows how long, exposed to the sun. We know that the human body swells due to the release of decomposition gases. We also know that the human body will after a time swell to the point where the skin can no longer remain intact and will explode. Medical forensics has long documented this.

I have always been of the belief that when they moved the body of Judas to the potters field, that it was then that his body literally exploded and his intestines came out. Either that or the tree he hanged himself on could have been on or very near the property of the potters field. When they cut him down the body could have literally exploded upon hitting the ground. Either sounds plausible to me.
