What is the anointing?...as opposed to an emotional high? |

Watching Rod Parsley for the first time in many years. He's definitely changed in some ways. As normal, the morning service is very "vibrant". They talked about the anointing and all. How can you tell the difference? |

The anointing should be to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
Christ went everywhere doing good and healing the oppressed at the same time He was afflicting scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees. He is after all the Christ(anointed one)! |

There is honestly a big problem here. The Christians who listen can at times KNOW the difference. That said...
There are motivational speakers who can bring an audience to tears and in a moment or two can have them on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the next 'great' revelation.
It is the same with some 'preachers'. I doubt anyone here listened to Forward in Faith with Earl Paulk Jr. I did almost every Sunday Night. I was a young man who thought I was called to preach. I was on the edge of my seat, or about dancing behind the wheel on the way home to hear him speak. Even during the time he was committing adultery. I was young, I knew his dad, and both were respected in the COG.
Evidently that 'charisma' continued when he established a monumental work in Atlanta. His ability must have continued even as he fathered a child by someone else's wife.
YES ability can be mistaken for 'anointing'. One must be in tuned with God, rather than like me and many others going on reputation, to KNOW for sure the difference.

As I read about the word 'anointing' from a biblical perspective, it is an unction from the Holy Spirit that helps us to discern truth from error. |

The anointing touches our emotions... |

I'd put it this way, I guess: The anointing is emotional (it touches ALL of our being, I believe), but being emotional is not necessarily the anointing. |

From 40 years of weekly pulpit experience I can tell you the difference.
There is a sensation that comes over the speaker where you know that you know it's from God & so does everyone else.
When you give that altar call they can't wait to tune in to heaven as they pray around the altars.
As far as Paulk is concerned it is probably best understood by this generation when we would listen to Swaggart.
God always honors His word & it will not return void.
In terms of controversy adultery is not the only sin us pastors have been guilty with because at times we've messed around with the money, and at times we haven't pushed away from the dinner table. Some have taken to booze or drugs while many have observed porn & still some have used church equipment as their own.
At my first church I followed a guy who felt nothing at using the church van to pull his boat most days of the week to go fishing & he used church $$ for the gas & expenses. Never missed a single reimbursement either. _________________ "Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!"
