Post Hurricane Florence Carolyn Smith
Just posted this on Facebook. Please keep us and all here in NC in your prayers.

Been a busy day. Just got back from Wally World AGAIN, 3rd night in a row! I think I have us covered for what we need. Thought I'd let everyone know that we are evacuating to a motel on Wednesday afternoon/evening. With a 91-year-old mother-in-law who is just out of the nursing home and a husband who is a transplant recipient and my challenges (🙄), it seems like the most prudent thing to do. Our home should be fine, since it is 8' off the ground and has concrete footers, but flooding is the concerning issue. Our driveway floods in storm conditions; with Matthew last year, the water came right to the base of our ramp & halfway up the siding. I have waded through thigh-deep water in the driveway before and have no desire to repeat that EVER again!! We left here in a rowboat that time, and I'll forever be grateful to Jenny Riggan and Robert Toler for that and letting us stay with them several days. (And John Smith had to be hospitalized that day too.) We have been through some stuff with storms!

It's hard not to think of our experiences with Hurricane Floyd 19 years ago THIS WEEK, so it's been stressful. Losing a home is a painful experience. Yes, it is just stuff, but it's MY stuff. Some folks didn't understand that with Floyd because we got new stuff, but it hurts to let go of that thing it took 2 years to pay off. Of course, stuff isn't the most important thing. Your family & loved ones are, so keep your focus #lookingup and your eyes focused on Jesus! Keep your family safe, and the rest will sort itselff out. (Thanks for that word, Pastor Jay-Jay Branch!)

I wouldn't want to re-experience what we did with Floyd, but I have to say I came out of it stronger and wiser. God blessed us in so many ways then that I can't even begin to tell you! Our church family surrounded us with love and care and literally took us in during and after Floyd while we were displaced for 5 weeks. (Thank you, Pamela Davis , Denise Newsome Morales, and Pastor Mitchell Wayne Flora and Lou Flora, and University Church of God!)

God's grace really is sufficient...some days you just have to take things a day at a time, but you will get through it. Please keep us in your prayers as we go through this. I am trusting the Lord to watch over us and all in this area. Thank you for caring and loving us, and if you've read this far, bless you!

We are definitely thinking of you. We happened to plan this trip to Texas, here we sit near San Antonio thinking of you and will be praying.

We are also hoping it just hoping it stops, or turns N and stays at sea! Our thoughts are Hugo that came all the way to our home in Gaston County..

Anyway, we will be definitely praying and thinking of your guys.

We are about 20 miles from our home, closer inland. Rain & wind have arrived but it hasn't made landfall yet. Lost power briefly once (seconds) and it came right back on. Supposed to make landfall by in the morning.

Not sure we had a hurricane during the time we were living there (at least a physical one ROFL ) but I can attest to what Carolyn is talking about. I have seen her driveway and I know that our place flooded almost EVERY TIME there was a thunderstorm in the area. Glad she and the family made it safely to the motel.

Biloxi was the 2nd place we lived after we got married in 1977. John attended a school there for 6 weeks at Keesler. Attended the Biloxi COG there, as I recall. We were horrified to find the pastor had a pool table in his home. LOL Oh how times have changed!

All is well here. As far as we know, no damage and little risk of flooding.

You might want to check out this website, Cojak. https://www.ncdps.gov/florence for information in the state about travel. They are discouraging people from travel at the moment. This info is also available on the ReadyNC app, if you have a smartphone.

Lots of hurting folks in NC. The downtown area of Washington was hit hard, but we live in the country so were not affected.

Please keep NC in your prayers, especially New Bern, Jacksonville, and all areas of the coast.

They have pretty much closed I-95 from Rocky Mount to Dunn because of flooding in various places.

I was in Biloxi '58-60. Bro Matthews, pastor, lived in a trailer beside the church. He would have never condoned a pool table Smile

Thanks for the travel advise, but it is not necessary. We are stuck in Georgia now, headed for Atlanta Cummins maintenace after the RV STOPPED! anticipating $$$ flying away! LOL. But God is good, and we know living on the road always has those dangers..
Glad you guys are doing okay!

I was born in 1958. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Sorry to hear of your RV troubles. Yes, that usually does involve a lot of $$$$!!!

Pray for the folks in NC. There are 1200 roads closed. Many will be without power for weeks more...They are having trouble getting shipments to NC. Last night I went to Walmart...no hamburger at all. Only a pack of ground bison(???), a couple of roasts/steaks/brats, etc. KFC had no chicken. Taco Bell was closed. Ordered a pizza; they were out of my favorite topping.

And this is where things are good and there's no flooding, well at least in the part I went in. Several places in the east are under water (New Bern, Jacksonville, Wilmington) with the water still rising....roads broken off...it's going to be a long, long time before Eastern NC is back to any semblance of normal. Fayetteville has flooding in several areas; they are still recovering from the same thing after Matthew two years ago. This is terrible to experience even as a strong Christian. I can't image how folks do this without Jesus.

Thank God for Operation Compassion. Under our AB's leadership, they are deploying around the state in several locations. They are touching and ministering to a lot of hurting people.

But we are very blessed not to have suffered any damage personally this time.
