Post Pastoral Sabbatical - who plans to take one? MayB2Day
Now that a 30 day sabbatical is now officially part of the Minutes, do any of you plan to take one?

It would be nice. I’d like to take mine either in the summer, or perhaps in December. I am glad the CoG at least has gotten the conversation started. Maybe some churches will start doing this. [Insert Acts Pun Here]

Thumb Up Thumb Up

Maybe at least District pastors should start suggesting that the churches that actually can, set aside $10-50 a week for a Sabbatical fund. More as the idea catches on, and the importance of same is realized. I think it is a VERY important action for a church, for their own well being as well as the pastor.

Little late for some of us but I am glad the measure passed.

I don't know if 30 days would have helped me. It has been over a year now and I still have some issues. I love the Lord! He has been good to me and I am thankful for His blessings but I will tell you my mental and physical and yes spiritual well being are so much better now!

I have gone through this year working harder than I ever have. Physically challenged...working 6 and sometimes 7 days a week. Currently I am working 3 businesses...trying to keep the one that has fed us and paid the bills for the past year while getting the other two going. I know the pastors that I have sat under must be somewhat frustrated because it is nearly impossible for me to be in church other than Sunday morning.

God has taught me so much of His faithfulness through all this! I feel so much better about myself than I ever did while pastoring. I think I was in a deep depression and did not realize it.

I am glad for the opportunity that He gave me to pastor and happy for the chance He has given me now! If the Lord is willing I will take these businesses to a place that will allow me to fund mission work and hey I might even preach overseas somewhere! It is still my desire to serve Christ and His body just not as what the western culture calls "pastor"

Post Does the sabbatical apply to all ministers? aprilmay2.0
If so, then those who work at HQ could take their sabbatical in November or January and really have a lot of time off since the office there is closed the majority of December.

That would be so nice.

Ouch.

Hopefully it is for the pastors that can't get away from their local church.

If it is for guys that are on staff at the HQ - that can already leave their tasks with someone else while they go on vacation - then it would be once again a huge waste that benefits the wrong folks.

Of course IMHO, this is for the pastor who NEEDS some time away from the daily requirements of pastor. I do not think it would have helped in my situation. I wasn't burned out, I reckon the old time name for my problem was I had back-slid. But at least I did not continue in a pulpit and try pt 'preach or teach' something I did not believe.

Now that aside, the sabbatical would have probably saved my dad's life. BUT such a thing was not thought acceptable in the 1950-60 time frame. We believed if you hit bottom just pray more, do not run away from your problems, FACE -EM. I think now that many people are beginning to realize that a pastor is still on this earth and human. He can have a nervous breakdown or backslide. Shocked Embarassed

I’ve caught myself being rather negative today so I’ll apologize in advance Embarassed

As a rule, the people of God don’t do well when the man of God is alone on the mountain with God. They murmer, complain, fashion golden calves, and self-appointed leaders emerge. I’m afraid the average COG pastor who took a month-long sabbatical might come home to a dumpster fire.

In theory however, I do love the idea.

Yeah January seems like the ticket since November has thanksgiving.

Post Might be like summer vacation... Aaron Scott
If you're like me, I am counting down until vacation...and then, when I'm on vacation, at some point, I start counting down until I have to go back to work.

It has been my experience that I usually need to "decompress" for 2-3 weeks BEFORE I actually start enjoying my vacation.

At the same time, there are HUNDREDS of retired ministers who would be DELIGHTED to get the opportunity to speak at your church while you're gone (and, in my experience, these are some of the most trustworthy men there are...they will want to build your church up and do a great job giving you time to renew). And as far as "affording" them, they are worth their weight in gold, but they often would PAY to come...and are usually delighted just to be taken out to eat and gas money (although I know everyone would try to do better than that).

Maybe that is one of the hidden purposes of our elders...to temporarily take the burden off of us, so we can come back and keep going.

16. Pastoral Sabbatical
That we amend page 173, S68, COMPENSATION FOR PASTORS, by adding the following as VII. Pastoral Sabbatical:

So as to read: VII. Pastoral Sabbatical
We recommend that lead pastors and, at their discretion, staff pastors take a sabbatical for purposes of personal spiritual renewal and marriage/family strengthening. Furthermore, that said recommended sabbatical is taken upon completion of five (5) consecutive years of pastoral ministry and continue throughout the pastor’s ministry
career on a 5 (five) year schedule. Five (5) years of pastoral ministry shall not be limited to the tenure of the present location where a pastor is serving. We recommend that said sabbatical be of thirty (30) days in length and include total cessation of ministry roles and responsibilities for the full sabbatical period. The timeline of a sabbatical shall be planned in advance — the pastor working with the local church
leadership and calendar, so necessary preparations can be made for continued ministry during the sabbatical.

The state/regional overseer and district overseer are to be informed in advance of the sabbatical, and provided with dates involved, and information concerning ministry/leadership roles during the sabbatical period. The local church where the pastor is serving shall continue full compensation during the sabbatical period.

I love the line that says, "and at their discretion, staff pastors". I leaned over to my boss and lead pastor and said, "don't you already have that authority?"

At the end of the assembly when we also voted ourselves a retirement contribution raise I told him, "I'm going to need that 10% to start right when I get back from my 30-day sabbatical" Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
