Post Large Church Dilemma(?) philunderwood
I heard the story today of a large church that most of us would have heard of having a baby dedication Sunday recently. Parents email or call the church office and give their names and the Baby's name to be included in the dedication service and prayer. At a certain point in the service those parents are called to the stage with said child in tow for the moment they've anticipated for quite some time. Because this is a multi-ethnic, internationally flavored, church not all names are easily known or easily pronounced. Once on the platform, maybe ten couples are there holding their young child and waiting for the pastor's/church's blessing when someone notices...one of the couples is two females.
The pastor does what I would have done, prayed for the child and invoked the blessing of the Lord without a hitch in the service.
What might you have done?

Perhaps it is a single mother - and a friend came for support.

Why do you assume the worst?

Not sure how large this church is. When I pastored a church of about 400 we always had a form to fill out. Of course, in a church our size, I knew most of the couples. But the form has the name of the parents as well as the child. It is there we would have had a little knowledge of whether the parents were the same sex. It is then that we would have addressed the issue. It is best not to be caught in that situation. Smile

Heard the story from a staff member...didn't assume anything on my own. Why did you assume that I assumed? LOL

Just for the fun of it.

Or maybe the other lady was her mother - a young looking grandmother...
or an effeminate guy..
or a couple of lesbians.

No way to know without asking.

I would have done the same thing in that moment & then made a leadership addition to make sure these types of things are vetted a little better. I've done baby dedications for single moms & sometimes they bring a friend or family member of the same gender. I've never thought to ask about the relationship status before but now it makes me wonder.
