What age is considered to OLD to pastor?

I hear different pastors talking about not being useful or out of step with the times because of there age. One missions Rep said the age to leave the pastorate is 72 years old, because mission rep's in COG are encouraged to retire at 72... Charles Stanley is in his 80's, and still pastoring. There are others in mid to late 70's still pastoring and now two people running for president is 70 or close to it .....At what age should you think about stepping down?

Our pastor is around 85 and doing fine.

What Age to Retire?

When the following start to happen...

1. You repeat yourself constantly in the pulpit or start chasing rabbits.
2. You don't care about people anymore.
3. You become a caretaker of the flock you have and lose your vision for the future.
4. Status Quo is just fine with you.
5. When you are just working for the paycheck.

Personally, I have about ten years until I will retire from the pastorate at age 65, Lord willing. I look forward to it and hope to get involved as a Bible teacher in my retirement. I'd also like to serve as an usher. May sound odd, but I look forward to it. I pastor about 350 people now and the load is heavy. In ten years I'm quite sure I will be ready to hand the reins to a younger man.

Unfortunately most pastors at 65 don't have the money to retire. Many of them will have to continue pastoring until they are just not able to continue. If you can retire at 65 and be financially secure that is a blessing!

Based on FGminister's list all the pastors around here are too old. Age wouldn't matter. Laughing

.....but planning for the future does. I agree that as we get older we must plan and thinker younger moving forward. This has nothing to do with eliminating the wisdom and participation of our older generation. Instead, the question I beg to offer is, "are you multiplying out leaders?" Are you finding, raising up, and training the next generation of young leaders?

When my dad, who pastored 43 years, retired, he told me his biggest regret was not keeping his church young while he grew older. I think a great example is Jentzen Franklin. Just the other day, he was saying how important it is for him to keep looking to the next generation for his church. He encouraged all the Elijahs to find their Elishas and start the process....

His church shows it well....
