Eastern European custom |

Many Christians, including all the Pentecostal churches I'm aware of in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, have the tradition of women wearing a scarf on their head in church. I think that is almost exclusively a requirement for church, but not when they are at home or out in public.
It comes from the Bible where women were instructed to cover their heads during worship. Does that mean their entire head or is covering part of their head OK? It seems "how much" or how big the covering must be, is left up to personal interpretation, the pastor or particular denomination of which they are a part.
Most worship services I've attended or spoken at in Russia and Eastern Europe, the women worse something very similar to the small scarves worn in the video of the Ukrainian church.
It's evidently kind of like that Scripture, "Long hair is a woman's glory." How long, who decides how long, and who measures how long, becomes a another story. How long or how wide the required scarves are, may depend on who has the clout to make that decision and enforce it.

The sing really well. Aside from the scarfs, the people in the crowd look like white folks in the US. I noticed they generally look a bit more formal, more 'stiff' and glued to one place than Americans.
I saw some Russians taking a picture once when I was to OSU. Instead of smiling, they put on very serious faces. One young man in particular balled up his fist, held his arm at a 90 degree angle and put a serious, proud look on his face. A Ukranian classmate of mine said that in Russia and the Ukraine, if you walk around on the streets with a smile on your face, people think you are stupid or crazy.
Anyway, it's good to see Ukranians praising the Lord. It's also interesting how popular that song is. _________________ Link |
