Looking for old fashioned camp meetings - please help |
COGLayman |
I am looking to do a little traveling this summer and would like to visit a few old fashioned camp meetings. They don't necessarily need to be Church of God, but could be Pentecostal, Holiness, or similar. I want to attend camp meetings as they were 50 years ago. Please let me know any information you may have on where I could find some good ones. Thanks!
(location can be anywhere in the eastern part of the US - east of the Mississippi River) |

I am not positive, but Little Washington, NC has a Campmeeting that has been there for at least 80 years. Called Snowed Branch.
Of course it has been a long time since I was there, 1948 I think. But from what I hear it hasn't changed much.
The congregational Holiness has a CAmp Meeting, GReat folk, near Rutherfordton, NC at Shingle Hollow. I doubt it has changed much since I was there last in 1963.
I am not sure if WE will find what we remember as 50 years ago, but it would be refreshing.
The last few I have attended it seemed the introduction of the night speaker was about a praise sermon in itself. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

The closest things I know of in our day to campmeetings of 50 years ago are among the groups that still maintain the old-line 'holiness' standards of dress, hair, no make-up, etc. Since my wife wears light make-up, pants, and trims her hair, those folks generally don't view us as sanctified, and probably not even as saved.
But if you're interested in fellowshipping with folks who think they're basically the only ones going to heaven, I do know they are still around if you really want to find them. I cannot in good conscience recommend or promote such groups, however.
It is quite unfortunate to me, that old-fashioned campmeetings and revivals are a thing of the past, unless you want to try to fellowship with legalists who probably wouldn't accept you as even being saved. |

What do I mean by 50 years ago? |

Preaching not teaching.
Southern Gospel style music with little or no contemporary music.
Preferably old style open tabernacle
I really don't care about the cars driven, make-up, or dress one way or the other. |

Answer From my neck of the woods in the NC Piedmont amongst the older folk, preaching is louder and a little faster than teaching.
And I know that because I heard one older lady say that. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

You almost have it, but preachin' also has more hacks and sweat than teachin' They tend to have more whoops and hollers too. Teachin' is more friendly, but preachin' will rile em up. I know it when I see it |

I would google Gospel Assembly. They even have bands that remind me of the Bahama Brass Band of the COGOP's of yesteryear. They may still have the BBB at the General Assembly.
But this is GOSPEL Assembly. I thought they were Assembly of God, but they aren't. They have what appears to me to be "organized" shouting, at least dancing.

Well, ifn ats the only difference, hey, if I wanna git riled up an all, I'll just watch one a the presidential debates.
Ifn I want hacks/sweat, hey, I'll watch some overweight pennycostal preachers go to the gym fer the first time.
Ifn I want whoops/hollers, just watch the final game a the NCAA in Houston.
Ifn I wanna glean from the good Book, grow an mature in ma faith an all, I'll take the good teachin a the Word a God. |

Snowd Branch Campmeeting still happens every year in mid-September just outside Washington, NC. It's about a mile from where I live. I have not been in several years, but they are about as old school as you can get: open air tabernacle, folding chairs, and sawdust on the ground. They did finally upgrade the restrooms so you don't have to use the outhouse anymore. But bring a can of "Off" cuz the mosquitoes might carry you away otherwise! They usually have good services, and you can probably even get a good ole COG hot dog "all the way" after service.
Snowd Branch COG has a Facebook page, and they will have information about the exact dates. This year will be their 92nd year of campmeeting. My husband's grandmother went to it when she was a young woman, when they actually came and "camped out." His grandfather also helped build the open air tabernacle. _________________ "More of Him...less of me."

I was a kid, but I remember some wonderful folk. W.D. Moody pastored there in 1947-48 time frame. I have a feeling they still worship God. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

Eastern NC folk are some of the best. Good services, good singing, good preaching! _________________ "More of Him...less of me."

I'm getting "Long in the tooth " but I have no desire to step inside a time capsule. I respect that you prefer the music and services we had decades ago, but I have no desire to go back. You will have difficulty finding these kinds of services apart from the legalism that accompanies them. But best of luck to you ! |

This is true, Sheik, and the reason is that those who embrace this model believe it is the legalism that produces such services. |
