I remember the shock of seeing a pastor friend of my Dad's audacity to have a pool table in his basement. Acts-pert Poster

My Dad, who was born into an A/G pastor's home in 1940, used to say that when he was growing up, just about the only thing they could do that wasn't a sin was eating, and that's why they had so many obese people in church.

Wedding rings
Short sleeves
Ties
Hats in church for men (I'm still out on those LOL)
Long hair on men
facial hair on men
dancing (even with your wife)
rock and roll
guitars
drums

Basically if it tasted good it was OK (unless it had alcohol in it), if it looked, sounded, or felt good, or was fun, it wasn't.

Post While serving as Pastor at the... Mark Ledbetter
Midfield Church of God located on the Alabama Campgrounds many retired pastors lived there.

One member living there was Brother Wright. He came into the Church of God when the Alabama City Church of God (oldest in the state) was formed.

He was asked at work was he going to the holiness meeting and when he finally decided to go the tent had been burned to the ground and the leaders (among which was J.W. Buckalew) were jailed.

Wright said to himself these folks must be right so he opened his home to services. After the first night he crawled under his house to sure it up because he was afraid the flooring wasn't sturdy enough for all the commotion.

When he was asked to serve as a deacon he was asked several questions two of which were, "Do you drink coke," and "do you chew gum?" He gave them both up to serve as a deacon and didn't partake of either until he died almost 80 years later.

No coke, no gum.

Post What about SHORTS!!!! Aaron Scott
I still get along real fine with brothers and sister that still refrain from some of these things that are now mocked. I was not raised in a harsh environment, but I was around the atmosphere enough to just know that such things were "worldly." I was perhaps 20 years old before I found out, to my great surprise, that short hair on women was a big deal to some. Yes, I'd heard the teaching when taking in members, but I didn't know how aggressively it was held.

What about non-Christian music?

Television (didn't have one until I was 34-years-old...and I believe I was the better for it).

Saying words like "d*rn, bu**, g*sh, etc. Still don't say them.

Yep. My Dad said that when he was growing up, you couldn't drink a Coke, lest someone see you drink it and THINK you were drinking a beer. Same thing for chewing gum. They couldn't chew it lest someone THINK they were chewing tobacco. "Abstain from all appearance of evil" is the verse they were quoted. [Insert Acts Pun Here]
