Post Moving beyond the "God is my boyfriend" songs (L) bonnie knox
I have noticed that the songs we sing in church now are much narrower in scope than the songs we sang when I was a youngster. Here is an article that promotes broadening our imagery, especially beyond the American romantic ideal, when we sing of God's love.

Quote:

While romantic love serves to illuminate some aspects of the divine-human relationship, an overreliance on the American romantic ideal in worship has drawbacks. I offer applications to encourage worship leaders and worshipers toward greater faithfulness to Scripture and stronger discernment about contextualizing the Word in American culture.

Agreed - romantic love songs to Jesus have their place - but their is a much broader "love" out there.

Life is full of many more experiences than romance - our worship songs should incorporate all of them.

We have made most worship songs into romantic worship - like a 14 year old girl discovering first love.

We need to broaden our base - country songs don't just talk about the girl - they incorporate a dog, fishing, and hanging out with friends...oh, and trains.

But the perfect country song talks About mama, trains, trucks, prison,
getting' drunk. ie;

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run ned over by a da**d old train Laughing

I still think I would sing that song before some of the ones that are force fed to me at church.

Cojak, you would think so, perhaps, but as I read the article (which I think is very well researched), I noticed the songs she used as examples of the American romantic ideal were songs that we sing at our church. Most of the songs we sing are along those same lines.
