Post Snowd Branch, North Carolina Cojak
In another post Little Washington, NC came up. In my childhood times I remember the first time I saw the Ocean was during a Camp Meeting at Snowd Branch when the pastor of that church was W.D. Moody.

It was a high time in my life. At the time it was a sin to wear a bathing suit so Mama let me and my sister get in the ocean with all our clothes on, sorta like a baptizing.

Snowd Branch was a real camp meeting. Folks camped or stayed with church members that opened their houses for folks to sleep on the porches, floors and beds when available.

Do they still have camp Meeting there?

Cojak,

I happen to be a lover of old-fashioned campmeetings, so your post piqued my interest. I did a search and found the following: http://www.thewashingtondailynews.com/2014/09/19/commemorated-camp-church-celebrates-oldest-camp-meeting-in-state/

I would love to attend the campmeeting at Snowd Branch. Who knows? Maybe some day.

Snowd Branch Campmeeting is still alive & well. The Snowd Branch COG sponsors it every year. This is about a mile from my house. I haven't been in quite some time though. I am pretty sure campmeeting is next week.

This pic is actually from the 70s.

A little more Snowd Branch history. My mother in law's family helped build the tabernacle. His granny said they used to come in wagons and camp out on the grounds when it first started in the early 1900s. Her husband Johnny helped build it. I remember going almost every year as a child, chasing tree frogs and getting a snow cone after service. They also sold hot dogs "all the way"and it helped support their LWWB.

The campmeeting is still held in an open air tabernacle with sawdust on the ground. They just got indoor bathrooms in the last 20 years or so. (It still had outhouses when I was a kid.) They did some renovation a couple of years ago because some of the overhead beams and the stage area had rotting wood. The speakers are usually very conservative Pentecostal COG, and Danny Shortridge has preached it several times.

Good music, good food, good singing and preaching...and as long as you don't mind the mosquitoes and the folding chairs, you just might enjoy it (though I would recommend a good spraying of Off before you come!)

Thanks QW for the thread to the article. I recognized the 'tabernacle' immediately. Also in my life I must eaten a 'million' hot dogs 'all the way' for me and the LWWB.

Daddy had a 47 Chevy. the roads were all sand. He ran over a big Rattler close to the Tabernacle. got out and threw it in the trunk to show Walt (Walt was converted when Dad started the S. GAstonia Church, they were buddies.)

We got there a long time before church and Dad called to Walt, Come here and let me show you something, we were all gathered around the trunk dad opened it and that snake flew out of there. WE scattered, Dad and Walt really did kill it. WAlt said, "Was you gonna handle that big feller tonight, Frank?" They were like kids, two of the best friends until death.

We figured the snake was just dazed, but he did look dead. Surprised
