When I first went to minister in South, Georgia and saw "Holiness baptist" churches I thought that was humorous and quite the oxymoron, having been exposed primarily to SBC lay folk and diluted OSAS teaching.

Turned out they were legit. Who knew? Embarassed

Post Perdido Church of God, Mark Ledbetter
translated "Lost" Church of God.

Then there are churches named Beulah, which means "married" (Where's Squire Parsons when you need him?)

Then there is Beth Haven, which means "house of idols/demons"

The Holiness Baptist had several churches in our area. They split in the 70's. Now it is Holiness Baptist and Calvary Holiness. In our town they went with the Calvary Holiness.

Several of the CoG ministers in S. Ga came from the Holiness Baptist.

Many of their church's (both groups) are still very conservative as far as externals are concerned. There is a Holiness Baptist church within a mile of the Camp Ground.

Post Church of Condemnation Ventureforth
Church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross

Or "Church of the Condemnation" for short.

http://www.biblewalks.com/Sites/Condemnation.html

Does anybody want to go to the Church of the Condemnation? Wink

Perhaps some of you are saying it seems like you've been there before.

Well, this one's in Jerusalem.

I know, it's just a part of the Via Delorosa. But I wouldn't think the short name is a publicity strength.

Post Quiet Wyatt
What about churches whose physical building's appearance is in stark contrast to their church's name?

I once saw a church named "Breath of Life." Their building looked so tacky it made me think it ought to be called "The Last Gasp."

Post I've never ... Mat
I've never liked the name "Church of God of Prophecy" and found it to be a problem. The best thing the leaders of that church could do is move out of Cleveland, TN and change the name. This is especially true since the denomination is trying to do a "paradigm shift" away from who they were. The name itsself, besides being uninviting, is a misnomer. From my experience there is very little of the "prophetic" in either a strategic direction for the denomination or an operational manifestation in the local congergations. However, I see this trend in many denominations and independents. The the goal seems to be, in many cases, to become the "Generic Church of Fellowship and Friendliness."

Mat

PS I know its a "fun" thread on names, but really how can you look at the the name "Church of God of Prophecy" without either a question or a smile.
