Post daddyohohoh
About 8 years ago my wife and I were reading a couple of marriage enrichment books. We were at 8 years of marriage and realized there was much more for us to work on. We bought these books at a "Mardel" Christian book store.

To our surprise one of these books encouraged, each partner to masturbate in bed next to the other.

Needless to say we dropped that book, and I have no idea what ever happened to it.

One thing about it, that book never made it into my list of suggested reading material for married couples.

Well, I would certainly agree, but if my wife were away for a month I would think talking to her on the phone and considering other options would be okay. But all of this discussion is needlessly clouding the issue of doing it in a premarital context, in my opinion.

A good friend has been in Iraq for nearly six months. Things happen that keep people apart like that. But in any case, I think we're letting the premarital bunch off the hook here by occupying this thread with our discussion. Wink

sooooooo... do you think they are thinking about God while they are ministering to their flesh? or maybe they are in deep thought about some of His creation?

I surely want to think you're just messing with someone. Do you think about God 24x7 and engage in some deep thoughts about him every second of every day? Do you think about God when you belly up to the food bar and have a third plate of slop? Do you think about God when you take a squat on the toilet? Both are great gifts from him...the toilet as well as the ability to defecate. It's a gift from God to have money to go to Ryans and in some regard, their chicken pot pie could be considered a gift from God.

How bout it Mem, do you apply the standard you're judging this post by?

This is just stupid. Could someone please show me in the Bible where is says, "be holy as Memory03 is holy". I see, "Be holy as I am holy." Of course none of us are as holy as Jesus was - nor will we ever be. However, that doesn't mean that isn't what we strive for. If we compare ourselves to there people, then we are setting ourselves up for failure. Do you allow yourself to look at porn because "at least I didn't get a prostitute like Jimmy Swaggart did" or "it's better then having an affair"? This is the most ridiculous line of reasoning I have ever heard. Be holy as Christ was holy. With that said, if you can justify masturbation by knowing that Jesus did it - then go for it, but otherwise, I'd say it's a tough point to prove. Jesus was a prime candidate for it in today's world. He was a 33 year old virgin for crying out loud.

I do think it is possible for someone to masturbate without having lustful thoughts. Some married couples might testify to the fact that they can have intercourse without thinking about sex, so why couldn't someone masturbate the same way?

Does it make this ok?? What I am getting at is this: is it OK to have sex with your spouse without thinking about it?? The line between them and a one-night-stand gets blurred if you ask me. Sex without emotion or interest is not ok with me and my wife. I am not even saying it is sin, just not ok for us. If we, as husbands, are supposed to love our wives as Christ loves the church. Do we honestly think that Christ could commit the most imtimate acts with his church - without thinking about them, or being interested in it?? It is a sad day, IMHO, that married couples are 'making love' without love being part of the equation at all.

I agree in my second post. That is conviction. I think most wives would agree that they want to make love more than just 'do-it' and get it over with, but at any rate, it is more conviction. My first post, on the other hand, did have scripture. My argument was that we cannot base our actions on what other people do - we must base them on what Jesus would do. I know that is a ridiculously cliched statement with WWJD bracelets and all, but it is still truth. What would Jesus do is what we base holiness on - not the guy next to us, right??

Not to mention, in my second post I did talk about husbands loving their wives as Christ loves the church. So, based on what we KNOW about God's character, can't we reasonably assume that Jesus - in His most initmate dealings with His bride, could not do it without thinking about it??

This is stupid. Had you read my post, you would have realized that I was calling the comparison of holiness based on another person stupid. We are not insrtucted to compare our holiness with other people, we are called to compare our holiness to Jesus' holiness. Do I think that Jesus kept His mind on God, and the things of God all the time, yeah, I do.

NOT WHAT THEY SAID TO DO!

Have mercy! I'm sure that most understand the "embarassing implications" of masturbation, but to take part in that with your spouse seems a little odd to me.

I have to agree with you. In the marriage bed, I have no desire to do something to myself. It's supposed to be about satisfying EACH OTHER, ain't it?

Well thank you for clearing that right up. I'll try to get in to see my counselor today, since some guy named PreFontaine, quite likely the most intellectually astute and certainly among the most prolific posters on ActsCelerate-thinks I'm stupid. Anyone have any sack cloth and ashes I can borrow?

Please be patient with those of us who are still learning, wise one. You can't expect us all to have it together the way that you do.

Incidentally, I did read your post-several times, and it was not coherent. Maybe it was just too deep. I'm not quite at your level...you and Jesus that is.
