I can't name two COG pastors in the state of Illinois... |

I am in southern Illinois and know where the COG's are located.....Herrin, Thompsonville, Marion, Benton...WC...I am sure there are others...but I cannot name 2. |

I apologize for my snarky reply earlier Dean. I did a really poor job of making the point I wanted to make. I guess my thoughts can best be expressed this way: The guys I know who are doing a great job, I would not want to remove them and place them as a career politician. Many of our administrators are so far removed from actual ministry and yet they are the ones making policies that affect the guys on the front lines.
I am very much an advocate of our leaders being active in pastoral ministry. I know some think that they couldn't pull "double duty " but I promise you they can. The Southern Baptists have been doing it successfully for years. Not to mention all of our bivocational ministers who work 40-plus hours a week and pastor their respective churches.
So until we stop being so top-heavy as an organization, I'm not in favor of taking anyone away from a place they're making a difference to sit in an office in Cleveland TN. |

I didn't take you wrong or with any malice & I hope it didn't sound like I did - I agree with you in regards to the guys who are doing a great job at their respective posts. Removing them from doing an awesome work & elect them to a potentially successful work could spell trouble.
For years I have admired the SB for their position on executive leadership must also pastor a church, it keeps them sensitive to the issues a pastor faces all the time. The CoGiC do the same thing as the SB.
Our system needs a serious makeover.

What do you mean by "really getting the job done?" |
What I mean is In their area of ministry the minister is excelling in their position to the point where you have heard about their growth or success. I think my request is fairly easy to comprehend as several have made mention of some excellent ministers in their area.
My motive for this question is to ask about ministry leaders in our individual states who are excelling to the point where we as O.B.'s should consider using fresh leadership on the Ex Council & Ex Committee.
When i see the list on some of the other threads of the presumptive nominees it shows me where we're both weak & strong.
Do we grow & challenge ourselves by electing the same guys over & over?
Is the CoG going in the right direction of numerical growth if we keep re-electing the same guys on the circuit?
On the other side do we keep re-electing the same guys based on the performance record we've seen so far & we like the pace we're on?
I for one would love to see a major shake up in Cleveland in terms of leadership.
The shake up would include electing the PB & all the assistants from all areas of the U.S.
Split the country up into 5 regions & one EC member has to be elected from each region.
Currently the majority of guys serving on the EC or C18 are living East of the Mississippi & I would guess south of the Mason Dixon.
It may sound like fair representation if you live inside that geographical bubble but it doesn't sound like it represents a national view. If most of our leadership lived west of the Rockies & their ministry experiences came from west coast based churches with our national HQ in Seattle, Washington would you feel like the CoG had your best interest?

I meant no disrespect in asking what you meant by getting things done...
I've not been on here much in the last couple of years, and just saw your post. I figured I knew what you meant by your question, was just asking to make sure- the older I get, the less I like to assume.
There are several guys here in the Razorback State that love Jesus and are doing everything they can to advance His kingdom in the area they have been assigned. I don't know of a church in my area that is growing faster than the Rock of NEA- Terry Watson, pastor.
Ben Wiles, River of Life, Hot Springs, AR and Lance Arguello, Abundant Life, Farmington, AR (church plant now 12+ years old) are both phenomenal men of God as well. |
Chris, I wasn't offended in any way & I think I worded my response a little heavy so I too meant no disrespect.
I guess I see a few guys here & there who are wonderful administrators & some are wonderful pastors. In many cases they are seeing excellent growth even when they move to a new community. I know guys who have led great churches & the next one is a struggle. I know guys who have struggled for years & they land on their feet at the next appointment. It's really odd how sometimes our best growth happens when we have a personality that gels well with the community.
In the same like manner it seems like we would see awesome growth if we had people of leadership who had influence & character traits that reflected the geographical area where we serve in the field.
If all of the Executive leadership come from the S/E & we are serving a beach community on the west coast, it makes me wonder how (outside of my influence) effective the national leadership can be if they only have their ministry experiences rooted in a certain geographical zone?
For the most part on the west coast very few people have ever heard of the CoG & even when they attend for several years they feel very little connection to the denomination.
I did an in-house poll not long ago & one of the things I asked about was our religious denomination affiliation. Many people in our church thought we were an non-denominational independent church. Even though we support youth camps, Winterfest, teen talent, SIMS. CAMS & have 8 credentialed ministers in leadership roles, some of our people still have not made the connection.
Probably comes back to the local pastor & how mush he promotes the blue & gold banner

This is us as well in Central Texas. We support all of the programs and we have three credentialed ministers, another that's gone through MIP and a COG certified chaplain. We did a "poll". Not one person other than myself is a member because it's COG. They come and have joined because they love the local church. _________________ Proverbs 3:5-6; John 13:34-35; Acts 1:8 |
