It doesn't. But when one gender is strongly encouraged or mandated to be unfashionable and the other gender is allowed to dress in fashionable clothes and groom themselves in modern ways, it indicates a potential power imbalance that is not godly in origin.
There are plenty of ways to be modest and still dress in modern, fashionable clothes and/or have a current hairstyle. If I am allowed to do all of those things but my wife is forced to dress and groom herself as if she is living in the 1700s, it is not unreasonable to say I am forcing her into a form of bondage. |
When I married, I was shocked to learn that she 'cut' her hair. But I knew this lady was Christian in every sense of the word. I kept my mouth shut and learned a lot of things in the first couple years of marriage, it made life better.. My mama and dad were a team, but I grew up knowing men who 'ordered' their wives around, looking back, I did not see love as I came to know it.

Surely not. It's possible that conviction could place him in bondage, but that certainly doesn't seem like any kind of absolute.

I think caseylee's observation and assumption about this has been unduly generalized into the issue, actually.
I have known Mennonites who have emphasized 'plain dress' (I.e., the 'Old Mother Hubbard' look for women, the 'farmer in the dell' look for men) but with Pentecostals, it has generally been a conviction regarding modesty for both sexes (which must always be to some extent culturally relative, of course). I have not generally seen or read of Pentecostals requiring their wives to look poor or shabby or unstylish, per se, as a standard of holiness, while the men could look as stylish as possible. But if such were the case, I would of course agree that it was ridiculous and unjustified. |

It's very simple. Us women are to submit to our husbands. We are to do, act, say, and yes, dress like they want us to. In the act of submission, it is required that the woman not dress or appear in any way equal or better than her husband. It is our mission to bring all focus and attention to our husbands. It is God's command. |

I guess one could look at nature, i.e. the Peacock, the Red bird etc. and say the man is to out shine the woman. But I am not sure Nature reflects that in humans. I remember seeing preachers decked out with the french cuffs and fancy cuff links, a super tie clasp and his wife in a home made flour sack dress. Nah, I don't see that as God's plan. but I could be mistaken, I certainly have been many times.

Good christian women in the COG are considered second rate and not equal to men. The upcoming GA speaker Anna Diaz is a pastor of a church of 10,000 but yet she can't vote on the level of a bishop (man) who pastors a little church of 15 people.
There's definitely not any equality there. But that the way men Bishops want it.  |
