Post Security plan? excellentposter
Does your church have a security plan in place to take out someone who enters to do harm to your parishioners?

Would you mind sharing a little with us?

I am not the pastor at our home church, but I understand that we have 6-8 concealed carry men who alternate duty. I know that once service starts they lock the main entrance door and stand by to unlock to allow late comers in.

This is still an iffy thing, and a tough judgement call because if the late comer seems to be a respectable visitor, you would not want to turn them away.

But unless metal detectors are installed what would keep the visitor from walking in with a weapon concealed before service?

When thinking of this type of menace, it is hard to defend BEFORE the fact and a terrible to start a fire fight in church, but some answer is better than none.

I am amazed that no one in the congregation in Texas could not return some fire. it is all sad and too hard to think about! Sad

A metal detector won’t stop them from entering, it would just cause an alarm and maybe contact police. But, a suicidal guy with a gun will go ahead and do just as much damage with an alarm sounding. Friendly Face

My daughter attends a PH church where the county sherriff also attends. It's my understanding that they have an organized team that protects the property during service. A lot of people carry here in ENC, and I'm sure they do in TX, also, so it is surprising this unfolded the way it did.

My pastor's dad conceal carries and regularly checks the property and is usually by the front door or entrance into the sanctuary during church. I wasn't even aware of this until I mentioned church security to the pastor in conversation.

Cojak - Isn't it against the law to have the front door of a public building locked while people are there? Seems like that would be dangerous in case of a fire or even in a shooting situation where the shooter was already there...

I think it is something all pastors need to think through and address in these days and times.

I don't know the answer, I hope I am never faced with the situation.

I do know that you will never keep guns out of the hands of crazy people or evil people, no matter how many gun laws you have. They will find a way and especially if they are willing to die to accomplish their mission.

This is a sad and evil time that we live in.

Armed guard at the door----the only thing to stop it.

Concealed carry can stop the carnage early - but only an armed guard can prevent it...and he would probably be taken out first - because you know he won't be on top alert most of the time.

Post We are not a mega church brotherjames
But we have a largish campus with 3 unconnected buildings. We have a security team made up of at least 5 men who have concealed carry permits. Our children ages 5-18 go to a separate building after our praise service and a armed man escorts them to the building. After they are in the building the exterior doors are lockec to outsiders but the building can still be exited by panic bars. The nursery and toddler area exterior doors are also locked but have panic bars. The two main entrsnces to the sanctuary lobbies (front and rear) are monitored by armed ushers although we are considering locking the less used entrance after the service begins. We have more guns in our service than i am really pleased about but in light of yesterday maybe its a good thing. We have a state police officer who was carrying 3 on him yesterday. We are now today evaluating our procedures to see where we might tighten up things. Our local sherrif's office has indicated they will come and recommend some things to any of the area churches. The problem is i don't want overkill either. Its a fine line but if you don't have a policy or procedure in place now tben you are being negligent.[/b] Acts-celerater

I am sure you are right, but the public building codes require a certain # of panic bars that open from the inside only. Ours is a newer building (<15yrs) and has the panic bars. many of our churches are old, so yes that would be a problem in that case.

I honestly do not see how the START of a shooting could be prevented, too many variables, but it would be good to have some way to reduce the carnage. Crying or Very sad

I fear and pray that it will not happen, but I dread to hear of a 'shootout' in church. I realize it is only a building, but so many of us have considered the church a safe haven, a secure place where one could run for comfort, almost sacred. Crying or Very sad

Post Just to add a couple of things brotherjames
Our Security team is a rotating group of 5 out of 10 volunteers - they do have walkie-talkies also. All are trained in concealed carry and church protocols. We plan to up our game a bit since this most recent horrible event. A local retired State Police Colonel is coming to give us his input on where we might improve our security without being obtrusive about it. We do not patrol our parking lot per se but our facility offers good views of them from our sanctuary so they are watched as we have had a couple of incidents there over the years (theft from cars - which was due to a parishoner who was using drugs and who was stopped). We pay to have a Sherriff park his car near the front entrance and stay to provide security during the service. Four years ago people thought we were going a little overboard whith the security, but nobody complains any more. We also have 3-5 people that carrry in the congregation. The elders have been to 2 training sessions on what to do in case of emergency. Golf Cart Mafia Soldier

Post Full Armor Church Security Solutions cdhenderson
I contacted Brother Doyle and he so graciously granted permission for me to post this highly recommended resource.
Dwayne Harris is an Ordained Bishop from Florida. He is also active law enforcement. Dwayne has created an entire curriculum on Church Security with a Biblical foundation. I would do a great injustice trying to explain Full Armor Church Security Solutions other than it is your all-inclusive source of information... From job descriptions to full implementation of a security ministry. He even offers low cost criminal background investigation services.
I needn't say more... go to www.fullarmorchurch.com
