What are the qualification--the REAL qualifications--of a university president?

It is NOT having an advanced degree.

Ultimately, it is superior organizational and fundraising skills.

And, in the case of a Christian university, there is also the necessity for someone of integrity, respect, and and Christian witness.

But I may be missing what you are trying to say. Would you kindly elaborate?

If I am not mistaken, John MacArthur runs a seminary with only two honorary doctorates, and Franklin Graham has six.

Post So those concerned about ... Mat
So for those concerned about qualifications to be a college President, have all the Lee College Presidents of the past been "qualified"?

One writer pointed out, who I think has a PhD, that when Conn wrote LAMA he did not have a college degree (or any college?). Now I know that was 1955 and standards were much different, and perhaps some scholarship would have shaped his narrative somewhat different. However, if you're going to hold some things as sacrosanct, perhaps you should put it under the same "qualification" demands now profess for others.

It seems a little snobbish to infer since now the COG and Lee have "arrived" to the correct educational standards, the contributions of the under-educated can not surely match by overwhelming intellectual stature of the elect doctorate class.

How many Christian colleges and universities have fallen into teaching hearsay under the leadership of PhDs? Then again, how many of these institutions are training ministers for jobs that no longer exist?

Post NO Ph.D needed! Aaron Scott
A Ph.D is a great achievement. But it is as much about perseverance every bit as much--perhaps more--as it is reading, research and writing.

We've all met Ph.Ds that did not impress us. There is often politics involved. I read of on candidate that, if I recall correctly, killed his advisor. Why? Because he had been working a long time on his dissertation, when he was given a new advisor that found that subject matter unacceptable and told him to go in a very different direction.

Did that advisor deserve to die? OF COURSE! He had just made sure that the student had wasted several years of his life.

Also, a Ph.D requires MONEY. You can know more than all your teachers (as the psalm says), but if you can't pay the the college, you don't get a Ph.D.

This is not to belittle those who hold Ph.Ds. Many have done impressive work, and continue to impress with their insights. But as someone pointed out, Charles Conn's monumental LAMA is the book around which all other COG histories revolve. Further, his efforts at Lee College were visionary and long-lasting.

No matter how many advanced degrees one has, if they aren't organized and able to bring in funds for the college, they are not going to be a good fit. Charles and Paul Conn (and I presume Bro. Walker now) were the kind that knew how to run an organization and how to tap significant funds.

Charles Conn, many will remember, wrote a book about Amway. Thus, he has a good connection to the DeVos family, and their generosity has been beneficial for Lee.
