Post About temptation.... Aaron Scott
Matthew 5:28
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

I am preaching this week on temptation. For the first time in my 58 years, I saw something in this verse that might be absolutely apparent to all of you, but it was not to me....

Notice what Jesus DID NOT say: "...whosoever looketh on a woman and lusts after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

Did you get that?

"...looketh on a woman AND lusts after her...." No, Jesus said that a man that looked "on a woman TO lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

When David first saw Bathsheeba taking a bath, so far as we know, it was purely accidental. In that moment when this apparently supremely beautiful and naked woman was first seen, David might have felt his heart start pumping heavier, his breathing might have become labored, etc.

But in that initial moment, even though he saw and was attracted, he was not looking on her TO lust.

But in just a moment, the longer he KEPT looking, it changed from looking on her AND lusting...to looking on her TO lust.

James 1: 14-15 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Notice that a man is TEMPTED when he is drawn away by whatever desire is within him, but at some point, the nature of the matter changes. At some point, if we allow temptation/lust to get up enough of a head of steam, we ARE going to succumb to that temptation.

A man who is being tempted to return to alcohol, once he assents to it in his mind, the only thing that will keep him from that is, in some cases, the stores being closed, being out of gas, etc. In other words, IF HE COULD, HE WOULD.

And until that storm of temptation ceases, he is in great danger of succumbing to that temptation.

The initial temptation--the bee that keeps buzzing around your mind, trying to get you to give in--is just that, a temptation. But at some point, when you "throw up your hands in surrender," then EVEN if you have not yet taken the drink (or whatever), it has conceived (at least as I see it), and then, if acted on (and at that point, a person WILL act on it, if they can), it brings forth sin.

I'd appreciate some of your thoughts about this or temptation in general.

Evil thoughts are like birds. They may fly over your head, but you don't have to let them build a nest in your beard.
