Excellent article. Thank you for sharing.

I found this paragraph especially thought provoking:

Quote:
Bad theology has buttressed a climate of spiritual abuse against sexual assault victims. There is a tendency within evangelical circles to extend forgiveness over and over—even when patterns of sinful behavior have been established. The problem isn’t that they offer the mercy of Christ to persons caught in sinful patterns, but the idea that extending such forgiveness means the person should be allowed to remain in a position of authority. Church discipline should deal with entrenched patterns of behavior. The failure to enact church discipline for grave sin is itself a form of cheap grace, and it flows from an overemphasis on justification by faith alone to the exclusion of the sanctifying work of the Spirit.

This struck me as a very concise analysis of the contrast between the virtually endless mercy that should be available to an individual and necessity of there being structural and corporate consequences for that individual's sin, regardless of their personal repentance and the church's posture toward them as an individual.

Agreed Dave.

A prominent person of interest in the article is Darrell Gilyard - from my area - Jacksonville.

This is the nicest dude - a big smile - a really great preacher - crossed racial divides easily - I would often watch him on TV - but - he couldn't keep it in his pants - especially around 14 year old girls.

And when caught for the 2nd and 3rd time - the parishioners - as well as apparently prominent Baptist leaders according to that article - begged for him to be forgiven and continue as pastor. Jesus forgave him - why can't all you Pharisees. Even relatives of the little girls begged to let him stay - since he was obviously anointed by God. He truly has a gift for ministry - who are we to stop "who God wants to use?" God restored David, Peter, etc COMPLETELY ... - are you bigger than God? If you think you are you are a hypocrite and a Pharisee....

<sigh>

we've had the "forgive vs. restore (to same office)" debate on acts a few times. Usually its about 10 to 1 on the "restore" side where everyone who disagrees is cast as merciless tyrants (even though none of them said not to restore them to the body, or even as preachers, just not shepherds)

Maybe soon God will remove the tares, and though we'll be smaller, we'll be made more like He wants us to be.
