It appears he was laid in a manger right after being born. Most likely, she was standing as she gave birth - probably pretty close by the manger. Who knows - maybe she dropped him straight in.

It doesn't say.

I don't see any great factual mistake with it, however.

Two or three Christmas songs I've heard say He was born in a manger. That would have been rough on Mary.
