Anyone ever study Martin Niemölle |
SouthFloridaman |
I am fascinated by Martin Niemölle. He was a German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor who was also a member of the confessing church movement. He is best l known for this widely quoted statement.
Quote: | First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. |
I find his life fascinating. His life story is a good read about what the result of silence is.
I wonder if any of the more studied members of actscelerate could share some nuggets of knowledge that the average person wouldn’t know. |

I am a lot more familiar with Bonhoeffer. I really haven’t read much of Niemöller. |
