Defunkify the Christmas Music |
Link |
Does anyone else like their Christmas church music to be kind of traditional? I do for a lot of the old hymns. I prefer a traditional sound to new arrangements of hymns like Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, Oh Come, All Ye Faithful and Joy to the World.
Something I noticed in Indonesia is that the rhythm to the songs can be just a bit different to fit with the words, which messes makes the songs easy to mess up when singers sing them in English. The words get translated differently, too. "Jesus, Lord at Thy birth" becomes "Jesus, Son of David" in Silent Night.
I heard a version of jingle bells for a performance at church--- why I do not know-- and the Indonesian version says something about a merry Christmas and nothing at all about a one-horse open sleigh. They probably can't relate to that very well to the idea of a sleigh in the tropics. _________________ Link |

Not sure he applied Higher Criticism to Christmas carols, but than he would say carols only matter in how they effect your thinking about the persona of Christ. He would also remove a number of the words of the carols as unnecessary to the Christ story.
Its kink of ironic that his first name was "Rudolf", don't you think?
