Senator John Glenn passed away yesterday at 95 years of age. He was a modern day explorer similar to Christopher Columbus. I cannot imagine the courage required to be strapped to a rocket to be propelled into space. Today, with benefit of hindsight, we know, without doubt, the probability of being killed in the endeavor is extremely high. At that time, he had no idea on whether he would safely return or if his rocket would explode on the launching pad. 30 years ago or so, I saw him only a few feet away at the airport in Denver. I wanted to approach and tell him how much I admired his bravery, but it was obvious he was on "personal time" as he was with his family, grandchildren and all, and it was during the Christmas Holidays. I decided he deserved to have privacy. I could not help to notice that he overflowed with dignity and class. He stood straight as an arrow and continued to walk with the graceful elegance that reflected his military background. We have truly lost an icon and our nation is better because of his life. Rest in peace Mr. Glenn. |
