"Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come." Rom. 5:14
Death, destruction, pain, toil and sweat entered the world when Adam chose "to be like God" and try to find life apart from the One who is Life.
Death reigned.
This wasn't God punishing Adam for eating.
This was Adam choosing not to believe God, who told him that Tree would bring death, and cutting himself off from life, provision, protection, dominion, painless fruitfulness of a finished work in the garden.
This was Adam, and now us who didn't sin "in the likeness" of what Adam did, experiencing the natural consequences of Adam's choice not to believe that life and fruitfulness are freely given by a generous God.
Adam was "a type of Him who was to come". Jesus, the last Adam, made a better choice (1 Cor. 15:45). He believed the Father and in Him life reigns, righteousness reigns, grace reigns.
"The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Rom. 5:21
The Law, the ministry of death, showed us all how deadly and fruitless that Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil could be...we owned our own transgressions, not just Adam's.
But now grace reigns, through righteousness, to eternal life, through Jesus! _________________ I'm not saved because I'm good. I'm saved because He's good!
