Post Visitor's Packet Cojak
Most churches we attend as visitors have nice welcome packets. They are a great idea and tool for follow up.
DaSheik make a comment that I liked on another post. He said, "We have a visitors packet with a tear off that they can fill out and drop in the offering plate, IF THEY SO DESIRE." (Emphasis mine) Many times when visitors are asked to raise their hands, I do not, my wife feels like she is 'lying' if she doesn't raise her hand, Smile . Most of the time we will be in the area 1 or 3 days.

Most of the time we enjoy the visit and if there is a web site I will tell the church how much we appreciate it. But there have been a few times when the usher will stand and indicate he is waiting for the 'card'.

I know the visitor packets are costly and not to be wasted. If we were going to be in the area for weeks or months or moving in I would feel differently. We do not want to be on a mailing list (we pay to have our mail forwarded) but do appreciate the thoughts.

I personally like the churches that have the packets with the greeter so I can explain we are passing thru and have just stopped to worship!

I do think the coffee cups, pens and note pads are great for the folks moving into, or live in the area.

(Don't get me wrong, we enjoy the cups we have from some of your churches, and get to tell others around the campfire whose cup they are drinking from, but they were not necessary.) Embarassed

Post Interesting thoughts brotherjames
We used to have a greeter packet, then we went to a cd now we have nothing. On our bulletin there is a tear off that is filled out by a visitor ( the correct term from all the seeker church growth seminars is guest) and it is either dropped in the offering, given to an usher or taken to the information desk where it can be redeemed for a nice travel mug. Our website and facebook pages and church app seem to provide ample info for guests about the church and it's ministries. Most Everyone I have talked to at other churches have done away with the visitor packets you mention. We also don't call out our visitors. We welcome them and tell them to fill in the tear off and get a travel mug after the service. Most people do. Acts-celerater

That sounds like a good approach! Cool

Thanks Cojak! I want a first time guest to have as little anxiety as possible on their visit. Most of us are so conditioned to "church stuff " that we forget how intimidating it can be to enter a new and unfamiliar situation. I'm not going to boast that we have a ton of "walk-ins" because we don't. We see new faces all the time and try to retain them but we realize some are simply passing through (like Cojak) or they want to "shop around" (for lack of a better term).

I know some don't like it because it smacks of tradition, but I enjoy providing a bulletin. I think an order of service is nice because it gives a first-time guest an idea of how the service will progress. This is especially helpful if you're doing something out of the ordinary (i.e. Communion ). I remember visiting a church for the first time as a kid and the preacher got out a basin and said they were about to commence to "washin feet ". Not being familiar with any of that, I freaked out Embarassed

I have found in my experience, that people are far more likely to give you contact information if you allow them to do so on their own terms. Being aggressive with a visitor card or making someone stand or raise their hand on their first visit is ill advised in my humble opinion.
