A servant should always be available to those he serves. Throughout my ministry of more than 50 years, I have been on call 24/7, ... (Ironically I just got a call from a church member who is ill this very moment, and had to stop typing my response to pray for him over the telephone.) I was available 24/7 even when I had a staff of four full time associate pastors, but the church was very respectful in not calling me except in a case of real emergency. I am still a pastor and my number home number is listed in the telephone book and in the church bulletin every Sunday.
I remember when my mother died, about 2 a.m. one morning. Paul L. Walker was the General Overseer at the time, and he appeared at my dad's house within less than an hour of her passing. I thought that was one of the things ministers do. _________________ www.GrowingUpPentecostal.blogspot.com |

Thank you my brother!
I did not know your mother, I met your dad once. But that once was an impression I have NEVER forgotten. I knew he was a Man of God. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

There may or may not be a legitimate reason why the pastor in question was unavailable; and I realize the context may suggest I have assumed the worse regarding the pastor in question.
However, I took the opportunity to respond to a general problem and this post opened the opportunity to express my concerns. |
I had the feeling most were doing the same out of reflex. Well worded comment. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

What method do you use to screen calls, especially at night?

Hopefully, these tragic events are rare. At Stevens Creek Church, we have a dedicated cell phone that is assigned to the "On-call" pastoral care team member.
A smaller church could develop a volunteer team who would share the responsibilities. We have licensed ministers on this team, but again, volunteers could serve and meet this need.
The point is "Pastoral Care" and we as leaders but develop systems that insure that our people are cared for. We must equip the saints. No one should have to go through this tragedy alone. People need the Lord and they need some to walk with them through the dark seasons of their lives.
This is a tragic story. May the peace of the Lord be with this family.
