Post If we really believe water baptism is important... roughridercog
Then why are so many of our churches built without baptisteries?

We remodeled ours awhile back to have a built-in baptistry. Couldn't agree with you more.

In the past, for us, baptism was something we did at someone's pool when it was warm out. Not many would come. Then, after we built the baptistry, we started having baptisms regularly after service. Still, not many would stay.

Now, we have folks sign up and we film video testimonies. We play those during service and dedicate an entire Sunday once every 3 months or so to baptisms.

good point. Some churches just rent or buy repurposed buildings so they probably intend to use someone's pool or a lake/river. But there are some these days built as churches without them. Should be a warning sign to potential attenders. Ours is under a retractable trap door right in the stage floor, so some people might think we don't have one when they visit but we do. Maybe they read the Didache and prefer to use the creek. Around here, people use the ocean. I baptized someone at the beach on New Year's day.

Maybe the reason so many of our churches lack baptistries is because the vision was for a number in the sanctuary rather than discipleship.

Baptistries are also expensive.

I saw a portable baptistery that looked like it was made out of pipe and some sort of cloth or flexible plastic material that a Seafarers ministry uses to baptize fishermen at the local international port they use.

I don't think an empty baptistry disciples that many people, unless of course you seat them inside the baptistry for Sunday School classes.

I would not construct a baptistry in a new building. Far easier, and cheaper, to use rivers and the ocean or, as another poster mentioned, to wheel in a portable tank.

I like that, I will pass that idea on to my pastor.
