Post Choruses or Hymns? shaunbwilson
No debating here. Just a friendly poll to show your personal preference.

*Note: For the purposes of this poll, choruses means contemporary music.

I don't like the term "choruses" because that is not accurate. Contemporary music would be much more fitting. Hon. Dr. in Acts-celeratology

Post A good mix of "good hymns" and "good choruses Phil Hoover
A good mix of Scripturally sound Hymns, and Scripturally sound choruses...and not too much of either one.

Post I am encouraged prefontaine
It's good to see that the leading vote getters have a mix of both in them. I personally cast my vote for mostly new stuff, and occasionally hymns, but I was glad that that one and even mix are at the top. I think doing both is the best way to go. I am in a fortunate situation with a whole bunch of new believers, and even the "old hymns" are new to them. Hon. Dr. in Acts-celeratology

Post Perjorative Pastor Gary
The term "choruses" carries a pejorative connotation. A chorus is one brief section of longer song. The music we use and prefer is current and contemporary, but has verses, chourses and usually a bridge.

Post Probably not the best choices Tracy S Hamilton
We do praise and worship with a great band.

We do some hymns - rare but occasionally

We even do some "secular" songs if it fits the message.

but if those are my only choices, then it is choruses only

I'm fairly young but grew up with the hymns. So...it's really something of sentimental value to me more than anything. I like to pull out the redback occassionally and sing a song or two...I have my favorites "Someday" and "I Feel Like Traveling On" (just to name a few). But at the same time, I love the choruses. Mostly because they are more worship TO God rather than talking ABOUT Him or ABOUT how I'm feeling at the time. Smile "Someday" for me is a song that reminds me of our future and "I Feel Like Traveling On" is a song that encourages me to remember what's ahead. But neither song tells my Savior how truly and deeply I love Him. Most choruses like "You Deserve the Glory" is directly TO God. I hope I'm being understandable...sometimes I ramble...forgive me! Smile

Post Some of my favorites Phil Hoover
Choruses/Contemporary

Your Stedfast Love
You deserve the Glory
Majesty
Lord, I lift Your name on high
We bless Your name
We Will Worship the Lamb of Glory
Make Us One
How Great is Our God
O For a thousand tongues (Binion)

HYMNS/Gospel Songs:

O Worship the King
To God Be the Glory
Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah!
And Can It be?
Abide With Me
Sweet Hour of Prayer
Heaven's Jubilee
In The Sweet Forever
O Happy Day
Such Love
O For a thousand tongues to Sing (Wesley)
Come Thou Almighty King

Just to mention a few. And all of these songs are incredibly easy to sing. They all teach great theology, and lead us to think "rightly" about our Great God.

I like songs. Contemporary songs not parts of songs. We don't sing just verses nor do we sing just choruses. I know what you mean but the term is silly. Acts Enthusiast

Post TheoloJohn
Most of folks in the CoG erroneously believe that they are singing "hymns," when the fact is they are actually singing what is properly called "gospel songs." Even the title of our redback, "Church Hymnal" is largely a misnomer. Most of the songs contained therein are not actually hymns at all but are instead actually "gospel songs."

I often wonder what the "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs" that Paul told the church to sing might entail. How were psalms different from hymns in the early church? And were "spiritual songs" singing in tongues? I honestly don't know for certain; I'm just posing the questions.

We don't sing them in Hebrew or Greek, because they were never written in HEBREW or GREEK,

And yes, we should be concerned with theological and Scriptural accuracy.

God wants us to think accurately and rightly about Him, His Son, and His Holy Spirit.

Accuracy is important.

And "wrong worship" does no one any good.

Just ask Lucifer.
