Dr. Craig Keener's excellent treatment of this difficult subject is a must read, in my opinion:

Just briefly (because I need to get to sleep right now) the innocent party is free to remarry. A divorce under both the Old and New Covenant was considered a real freeing of both parties from the marriage and as such "the innocent party" was free to remarry. What Jesus forbids is divorce "for any reason." That is, for unjustified reasons. But Jesus does give ONE reason--sexual sin as an exception to the general rule of "Don't divorce, ever."

In 1 Cor. 7, Paul gives abandonment by an unbeliever as another valid reason for a believer to be "not under bondage in such cases." The word translated "depart" in 1 Cor. 7:15 is precisely the same word in the Greek as "put asunder" in Matt. 19:6.

Blessings,

John
